Updated February 9, 2023

Since 2010, Amerisleep has been revolutionizing the mattress industry. From their plant-based memory foam to their innovative HIVE® technology, each Amerisleep mattress is designed to deliver deep, restorative sleep. Plus, Amerisleep understands mattresses are not one-size-fits-all. Therefore, they construct each of their beds with a specific body type and sleep position in mind, ensuring everyone can find a mattress that feels tailor-made to their needs.

Throughout this article, we highlight what makes Amerisleep unique and why millions of people are finding better sleep with their products. We also outline each Amerisleep model so you can decide which style is the best mattress for you.

The Good

  • Plant-based memory foam, Bio-Pur®, is breathable, responsive, and eco-friendly
  • All foam layers are certified by CertiPUR-US® to be free of harmful additives and low in VOC emissions
  • Ventilated cover is removable and machine washable for easy cleaning

The Not-So-Good

  • Cheaper options available on Amazon though not of the same quality

Amerisleep Mattress Similarities

Although each Amerisleep mattress is slightly different, they are each made with a similar construction method and come with many of the same features. Plus, Amerisleep offers the same warranty coverage and sleep trial period with each purchase.

Fire Guard — Traditional mattresses typically use chemical sprays to pass flammability tests. However, chemical flame retardants are often toxic and can lead to skin and eye irritation. Amerisleep’s mattresses are completely safe and non-toxic because they use a natural flame retardant made with Silica. Silica is naturally found in water and plants. Plus, it is sustainably harvested and eco-friendly.

Bio-Pur® Comfort Layer — Traditional mattress foams are made with petroleum-based oils, crude oil. These foams tend to retain heat and moisture, causing sleepers to experience night sweats and overheating. They also have very little responsiveness, which can lead to excess sinking and spinal misalignment.

To combat these issues and create a safe, non-toxic mattress foam, Amerisleep replaced a portion of the petroleum-based oils in their Bio-Pur® foam with plant-based oils. This manufacturing method makes Bio-Pur® more breathable and less likely to retain heat, perfect for hot sleepers.

Bio-Pur® has the perfect level of bounce to keep the hips and shoulders lifted and aligned, no matter what position you sleep in. While this material contours to the body for pressure relief, it also delivers the perfect level of support to the lumbar spine.

Like most memory foam varieties, Bio-Pur® is made in several different firmness levels, from ultra-soft to firm. This gives Amerisleep the ability to change the feel of each mattress and tailor the design to each sleep position and body type.

Bio-Pur® is also certified by CertiPUR-US® to be free of harmful additives and have minimal off-gassing (new mattress smell) when brought indoors, perfect for those with severe allergies.

Ventilated Cover — Amerisleep’s mattresses are wrapped in a soft, breathable cover. Air channels throughout the material ensure body heat doesn’t become trapped in the mattress and cause overheating. The cotton-poly blend is quick-drying and wicks away heat and moisture. This airy yet cozy cover is also removable and can be machine washed, making it easy to keep your mattress clean and in good condition.

HIVE® Technology — All Amerisleep mattresses, except for the AS5 Hybrid and AS1 memory foam models, have an Affinity foam transition layer with HIVE® technology. Across the top of this foam, hundreds of hexagonal cutouts are grouped into five different zones.

Each zone is designed to provide the perfect level of compression and support to the areas that need it most. For example, near the hip joints, cutouts are spaced further apart to cushion this sensitive area. Along the back and near the lumbar region, cutouts are closer together to provide firm support. This layer promotes a healthy spinal position so muscles can fully relax, and sleepers can wake up with less pain.

Active Flex — Amerisleep’s two softest mattresses, the AS5 and the AS5 Hybrid, have an Active Flex transition layer. This foam has a latex-like bounce to keep the hips lifted and aligned with shoulders. Most ultra-soft mattresses cause excess sinking that can force the spine to bow, causing tension build-up in the back muscles. However, with Active Flex, Amerisleep mattresses prevent spinal misalignment and reduce tension build-up.

Bio-Core® Base — All five Amerisleep memory foam mattresses, the AS1, AS2, AS3, AS4, and AS5, have a base made with Bio-Core® foam. This material is strong and durable to support the softer layers above and prevent sagging. Like Bio-Pur®, Bio-Core® is non-toxic and produced with eco-friendly methods. It is also backed by a CertiPUR-US® certification, guaranteeing it is free of harmful additives and will have minimal VOC off-gassing when brought indoors.

Pocketed Spring Coils — Amerisleep’s three hybrid mattresses, the AS2, AS3, and AS5 Hybrid, have a base made of pocketed spring coils. Each coil in this base is triple-wrapped for added comfort and durability. Unlike traditional innerspring mattresses, the coils in each Amerisleep hybrid move independently of one another for more accurate contouring and pressure relief.

The perimeter is reinforced with edge support to make getting in and out of bed easy and reduce motion transfer. A 1-inch layer of base foam also sits beneath the spring coils for shock absorption and structural support.

Low VOCs — Traditional mattress foams release VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) into the air when brought indoors. The emissions are often referred to as off-gassing and are caused by the use of formaldehyde and CFCs. Although VOC emissions are typically harmless, it can be irritating to those with allergies and other sensitivities.

Amerisleep uses an eco-friendly manufacturing process to reduce the presence of VOC emissions in their mattresses. Their beds are tested and certified to be free of toxic chemicals and adhesives and to have a low VOC rating.

Certifications — The foam layers in each Amerisleep mattress have earned a CertiPUR-US® certification, guaranteeing they are free of potentially harmful additives, such as formaldehyde, toxic flame retardants, mercury and lead, phthalates, and other ozone-depleting substances.

Affordability — Amerisleep’s goal has always been to provide advanced, eco-friendly mattresses at an affordable price. By cutting out the middleman and shipping their mattresses directly to the consumer, they can offer their high-quality beds at a budget-friendly price.

Right now, each of their mattresses is available for 30 percent off the original price. This is a great opportunity to save on a durable and supportive mattress.

The Basics

  • Warranty: Amerisleep includes their generous 20-year warranty with each mattress purchase. This warranty covers sagging and indentations greater than .75 inches, loose threads in the cover, and cracks or holes in the foam.
  • Sleep Trial: When shopping with Amerisleep, sleepers have 100 nights to test out the mattress and make sure it’s right for them.
  • Made in the USA: Each Amerisleep mattress is constructed in the United States—this includes every foam layer, the cover, and the hybrid spring coil base.
  • Eco-friendly manufacturing: Amerisleep’s mattress foams are made with a cutting-edge, eco-friendly manufacturing process designed to limit population and waste.
  • Shipping: Amerisleep offers free shipping to anywhere in the contiguous US. Mattresses are shipped directly to the customer’s home within 5 to 7 business days of placing the order.

Amerisleep AS1

The AS1 is Amerisleep’s firmest model and is one of the best mattresses for stomach sleeping. This mattress is 10-inches thick and has a 2-inch Bio-Pur® comfort layer and an 8-inch Bio-Core® support layer. The ultra-firm feel offers very little give, so sleepers are less likely to experience sinking. However, the Bio-Pur® top layer is also soft enough to prevent pressure points near the joint. This firmness level ensures the hips remain lifted and aligned with the shoulders for a healthy sleep position so muscles can fully relax.

  • Perfect for stomach and back sleepers
  • 10-inch profile with an extra-firm feel and very little give
  • Supportive Bio-Core® base prevents sagging

Back

Back sleepers who prefer a firm mattress will find the AS1 comfortable and supportive. This mattress will keep back sleepers lifted on the mattress rather than cradle them, making excess sinking unlikely.

Side

Side sleepers will likely find the AS1 to be too firm. The best mattresses for side sleepers are soft to medium to ensure pressure points don’t form near the hip and shoulder joints.

Stomach

The AS1 works well for stomach sleepers because the firmness keeps the hips and shoulders from sinking too far into the mattress. A firm mattress will lessen the curve of the spine when stomach sleeping and help alleviate tension build-up.

Amerisleep AS2

The AS2 has a medium-firm feel ideal for back sleeping. This mattress is also recommended for those with back pain and was named the “Best Mattress for Back Pain” by Business Insider and “Best Mattress for Lower Back Pain” by Men’s Health.

The AS2 has a 12-inch profile—a 2-inch Bio-Pur® comfort layer, a 3-inch Affinity layer with HIVE® technology, and a 7-inch Bio-Core® layer. These layers provide extra support to the lumbar spine. However, they are also soft enough to cushion the joints and prevent tension build-up.

  • Works well for back and those with back pain
  • 12-inch profile and medium-firm feel
  • HIVE® technology supports the lumbar spine and prevents pressure points

Back

AS2 is one of the best mattresses for back sleepers because the firm support and Affinity foam with HIVE® technology keeps body weight evenly distributed to prevent spinal misalignment. Back sleepers will rest with a safe, neutral spine on the AS2.

Side

The AS2 will likely feel too firm for side sleepers. When resting on one’s side, the hips and shoulders need more contouring to prevent pressure points.

Stomach

Although the AS2 is medium-firm, it may be too soft for stomach sleepers. An extra-firm mattress will reduce the exaggerated curvature of the spine and alleviate tension.

Amerisleep AS3

The Amerisleep AS3 mattress is their most popular model because it has a medium comfort level suitable for most sleep positions. The universal comfort of this mattress is also great for couples with different body types and firmness preferences. In fact, it was called one of the “Best Mattresses to Buy Online” by Allure Magazine. The AS3 is 12-inch thick with a 3-inch Bio-Pur® comfort layer, 2-inch Affinity layer with HIVE® technology, and a 7-inch Bio-Core® support base.

The layers of the AS3 provide the perfect level of compression to cushion the hip and shoulder joints when side sleeper. Plus, this mattress has enough firmness to cradle and support the lumbar spine when back sleeping.

  • 12-inch profile with a medium firmness and universal comfort level
  • Works well for back, side, and combination sleepers
  • Ideal for couples with different firmness preferences

Back

For average weight back sleepers, a medium-firm mattress like the AS3 provides the perfect comfort and support level. This mattress is soft enough to prevent pressure points but firm enough to keep the hips from sinking and forcing the spine to bow.

Side

Side sleepers need a soft mattress to cradle and protect the hip and shoulder joints from pressure. However, too much sinking can force the spine out of alignment. A mattress with a medium firmness like the AS3 is perfect for side sleepers.

Stomach

The AS3 is likely too soft for stomach sleepers. The medium memory foam may cause the hips to sink too far into and force the spine to bow. This can cause pressure and tension to build up in the back muscles.

Amerisleep AS4

Amerisleep’s AS4 is the best option for side sleepers. This mattress has a 4-inch Bio-Pur® comfort layer to cushion and protect the joints from pressure points. The 1-inch Affinity foam layer with HIVE® technology prevents over sinking and the feeling of being “stuck” in the mattress.

To ensure the soft layers above don’t sag or develop indentations, 7 inches of Amerisleep’s durable support foam, Bio-Core®, sits in the mattress base. This layer also helps promote spinal alignment and alleviate muscle tension.

  • 12-inch profile with a medium-soft feel
  • The 4-inch comfort layer is perfect for side sleepers
  • Stable Bio-Core® base prevent indentations and spinal misalignment

Back

The AS4 may be too soft for back sleepers. If the hips sink too far into the bed, the spine will bow and lead to tension build-up in the back muscles.

Side

The AS4 is perfect for soft sleepers because the plush, 4-inch Bio-Pur® comfort layer cushions and cradles the joints. The slight firm of this mattress also helps support the lumbar spine.

Stomach

The AS4 is too soft for stomach sleepers. This mattress has more give and compresses easily—this could cause excess sinking when stomach sleeping and focus the spine out of alignment.

Amerisleep AS5

The AS5 is a great choice for side sleepers and lightweight individuals who need more contouring and pressure relief. This mattress has a 14-inch profile—a 3-inch Bio-Pur® layer, 2-inch Active Flex layer, 2-inch Affinity foam layer with HIVE® technology, and a 7-inch Bio-Core® base.

When side sleeping, the hips and shoulders bear most of the body weight. If the mattress is too firm, pressure can build-up in these areas and lead to sore spots. Lightweight sleepers tend to sink very little, so they need a soft mattress for adequate contouring. The AS5 is perfect for both sleepers.

Although the AS5 is soft and conforming, the Active Flex transition layer prevents over-sinking and spinal misalignment, so sleepers wake with less pain.

  • 14-inch mattress with an ultra-soft comfort layer
  • Works well for side sleepers and lightweight individuals
  • Active Flex transition layer promotes a safe, healthy spinal position

Back

Back sleepers typically need a firmer mattress to keep the hips lifted and aligned with the shoulders. Therefore, an ultra-soft mattress like AS5 may be too soft for back sleepers.

Side

The AS5 works well for side sleepers. While the soft Bio-Pur® layer cradles the hips and shoulders, the Active Flex layer prevents over sinking and spinal misalignment.

Stomach

As with the AS4, the AS5 may cause alignment issues when stomach sleeping. It will be difficult for the hips and shoulders to remain aligned when stomach sleeping on a medium-soft mattress.

Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid

The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid has a medium firmness, perfect for side, back, and combination sleepers who prefer to feel more lifted on the mattress rather than cradled. This mattress has a 3-inch Bio-Pur® comfort layer, an 8-inch spring coil support layer, and a 1-inch foam base.

The coils in the AS3 Hybrid are zoned to deliver the perfect level of compression to each area of the body. This base makes the mattress more versatile and allows it to support many different types of sleepers.

  • 12-inch profile perfect for most sleep positions and body types
  • Zoned coil support system
  • 3-inch comfort layer cradles and cushions joints

Back

The AS3 Hybrid works well for back sleepers because the coil base is zoned to support the lumbar region without causing pressure points. This mattress will provide back sleepers with pressure relief and a slight bounce due to the spring coil base.

Side

The AS3 Hybrid is a great mattress for side sleepers. The soft memory foam comfort layer contours to the joints to relieve tension, while the stable coil base promotes a healthy sleep position.

Stomach

Stomach sleepers should avoid medium mattresses because excess sinking could force the spine into an awkward position and cause tension in the back muscles.

Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid

The AS5 Hybrid is Amerisleep’s softest hybrid and perfect for heavier sleepers who prefer a soft mattress. The AS5 Hybrid has a 3-inch Bio-Pur® layer, 2-inch Active Flex layer, 8-inch coil support system, and a 1-inch foam base.

The soft Bio-Pur® comfort layer cradles and cushions the joints. In contrast, the Active Flex layer and coil support system promote spinal alignment, so back muscles can fully relax and recover during sleep.

  • 14-inch profile and an ultra-soft feel with a slight bounce
  • Perfect for heavier individuals who prefer a soft mattress without excess sinking
  • Active Flex layer reduces spinal misalignment and morning aches and pains

Back

Although most soft mattresses tend to cause over sinking and spinal misalignment, the AS5 Hybrid has a slight bounce to prevent this. The spring coil base and Active Flex layer keep sleepers resting in a safe, comfortable sleep position.

Side

The AS5 Hybrid is ideal for side sleepers because the soft comfort layer contours to the joints to alleviate pressure points. The Active Flex transition layer and buoyant coil base also promote a safe, neutral spine.

Stomach

The AS5 Hybrid may be too soft stomach sleepers. If hips or shoulders sink too far into the bed, the spine will bow and lead to tension build-up.

Amerisleep vs. The Competition

Tuft & Needle

Tuft & Needle is one of Amerisleep’s biggest competitors. Both brands offer all-foam and hybrid mattresses at similar price points. Below, we break down how Tuft & Needle compares to Amerisleep in terms of materials, breathability, and comfort level.

  • Materials: Amerisleep’s mattresses are made with a high-quality plant-based memory foam that absorbs less heat and is, therefore, less likely to develop premature sagging and indentations. Tuft & Needle uses a lower-quality poly-foam. While this material is certified to be safe for human contact, it may not be as durable as plant-based foams. Plus, poly-foam doesn’t contour as closely as memory foam.
  • Breathability: Tuft & Needle infuses their mattress foams with gel microbeads and graphite minerals for temperature regulation. While these infusions work for a while, they may not be effective throughout the life of the mattress. In contrast, Amerisleep constructs their online mattresses with plant-based oils to prevent heat retention, making them more breathable and airy.
  • Comfort level: All three Tuft & Needle Mattresses, including their all-foam and hybrid model, have a medium firmness. While a medium firmness typically works well for most sleep positions, lightweight sleepers often prefer something softer and stomach sleepers need something firmer. Amerisleep offers more firmness options, making it easier for sleepers to find a mattress that feels more suited to their needs.

Both brands can help sleepers get a good night’s rest. However, for those looking for one of the most durable mattresses in several different firmness options, we recommend shopping with Amerisleep.

Is Amerisleep Right For You?

Shopping with Amerisleep comes with several benefits. However, if you are still on the fence, we outline the pros and cons associated with this brand below.

Pros

  • Breathability: Amerisleep’s plant-based memory foam and soft, ventilated cover ensure their mattresses remain cool and inviting throughout the night. In their hybrid models, each coil spring is wrapped in a lightweight fabric to increase air circulation and prevent overheating.
  • Pressure relief: No matter which Amerisleep mattress you choose, the Bio-Pur® comfort layer will alleviate muscle tension and prevent painful pressure points from forming near the joints.
  • Safe and eco-friendly: Amerisleep’s eco-friendly manufacturing methods and use of plant-based foam make their products safe for both you and the environment. With less VOC off-gassing, Amerisleep mattresses are also safe for those with severe allergies.
  • Durable: Since Bio-Pur® is plant-based, it naturally retains less heat and moisture. This feature allows the foam to break down much slower than traditional memory foams. Therefore, Bio-Pur® will remain supportive and responsive throughout many years of use.
  • Various firmness options:  Amerisleep offers eight different mattresses in various firmness levels, so it is easier for customers to find a sleep space suited to their specific body type and sleep style. While a medium firmness tends to work best for most sleep positions and couples with different needs, Amerisleep also offers a soft, medium-soft, medium-firm, and firm mattress.

Cons

Amerisleep mattresses are made with high-quality materials and are designed to last for many years—this value is reflected in the price point. While there may be less expensive mattresses on the market, they will not last as long or provide as much support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is memory foam bad for your back?

Any mattress that is too soft for your specific body type and sleep position can cause back pain. Mattresses that are too soft can cause the hips and shoulders to sink too far into the bed, causing the muscles in the back to clench and tighten. Over time, this leads to chronic back pain.

To avoid this, shop for a memory foam bed with a buoyant response layer or a zoned support system. These additional layers will ensure the hips remain lifted and aligned with the shoulders. When the spine is neutral, the muscles in the back can fully relax during sleep.

Can you flip an Amerisleep mattress?

No, Amerisleep mattresses should not be flipped. The Bio-Pur® comfort layer on top of the mattress is designed specifically to support and cushion the body. However, the Bio-Core® foam in the mattress base is intended to maintain structural integrity and prevent sagging. Flipping the bed could cause the Bio-Pur® layer to deteriorate quickly. Plus, resting on the firm foam in the mattress base could cause pressure points near the joints.

Is Amerisleep made in America?

Yes, every element of an Amerisleep mattress is constructed in the United States. Mattresses made in the US are generally safer than those produced overseas because they go through rigorous health and safety testing.

What is plant-based memory foam?

Most mattress foams are made with 100 percent petroleum-based oils. Plant-based memory foam is made with a percentage of plant-based oils or caster oil. Although there are several different ways to manufacture plant-based foams, Amerisleep’s method produces a more breathable, responsive, and non-toxic memory foam.

How are Amerisleep mattresses delivered?

Amerisleep’s mattresses are compressed, rolled, shrink-wrapped, and boxed, so they can be delivered right to consumer’s doorsteps. Once the mattress arrives, you should let it expand for about 24 hours before sleeping on.

Conclusion

If you are shopping for a durable, high-quality mattress tailored to your needs, Amerisleep is a great place to start. They understand that mattresses are not one size fits all, and their goal is to help you find the most comfortable and supportive mattress possible. Amerisleep’s 100-night sleep trial period and generous 20-year warranty take the risk out of mattress shopping and ensure you find a bed that is right for you.
