Updated March 17, 2023

It’s already that time of year–most of the summer sales have already ended, along with the major summer holidays like the 4th of July and Memorial Day. Perhaps you’ve been waiting for a big sale or low prices to invest in a new mattress, and Labor Day is one of the best holiday weekends for that.

Some Labor Day mattress sales are even bigger than Black Friday, giving you the opportunity to score a luxury mattress for a lower price– the trick is knowing what to look for when mattress shopping, and we’ll guide you through it right here.

Why Should You Shop Labor Day Sales?

Labor Day is one of the last big holidays before the winter holiday season, and the one most retailers will mark down their prices for. However, not all sales are created equal. Some places mark down their prices so low, it seems too good to be true– and it usually is. We’ll go over all the types of deals you’re bound to see later on in the article.

The bottom line: Labor Day is one of the best times to buy a new mattress because the sales are comparable to, if not better than, Black Friday, and you don’t have to worry about beating the frenzy of other eager shoppers to get the deal.

Our Criteria

When we were looking at all the big Labor Day sales at different mattress retailers, we focused on a few different things before giving them our stamp of approval:

  • Return policy and warranty: most mattress companies have some kind of return policy, but they’re not all the same. Some of them offer a sleep trial in conjunction with the return policy, and we’ll outline a few different companies’ return policies and warranties so you can get a complete idea of what’s available to you.
  • Quality: while mattress quality is arguably subjective, there are a couple of things you can look for to ensure the mattress will last a long time (and stay as comfortable as the day you bought it). It all comes down to the materials, construction, and how much you are willing to maintain it.
  • Customer reviews: some retailers advertise thousands of 5-star reviews on their website, but don’t assume they’re all perfect. Try to find the customer reviews page and filter out the good from the bad–that way you can determine if lower reviews were based on the mattress quality, the customer service, the delivery, or something else entirely.

Amerisleep has been around for about 12 years, and brand longevity means a lot when you’re comparing mattresses. They focus heavily on the technology and quality of their mattresses, and it shows in the customer reviews. When it comes to durability and quality, mattress construction is key; we’ll break down all the parts of the Amerisleep AS3 so you can see the quality for yourself.

  • Top layer: Soft, lightweight Refresh cover is ventilated to keep air circulation around the surface of the bed so you never wake up hot and sweaty. It also contains thermoreactive materials that take body heat and convert it into restorative infrared energy.
  • Second layer: Bio-Pur® layer is made of an advanced plant-based foam that is more breathable and more responsive than traditional memory foam.
  • Third layer: Affinity transition layer with HIVE® technology evenly supports your weight and provides motion isolation, so you can rest easy.
  • Base layer: Bio-Core® foam support layer won’t sag even after years of use.

The AS3, like all Amerisleep mattresses, comes with a 100-night sleep trial, so you can test out the mattress in your own home and see if it’s right for you. If you do decide to return it after a month, you’ll get a full refund. It also comes with a 20-year warranty that covers manufacturing and structural defects.

What else makes the Amerisleep AS3 one of the best mattresses? Let’s talk about the layers in more detail.

Plant-based foam: Most memory foam is made with petroleum, or crude oil. Amerisleep replaces some of that petroleum with plant-based castor oil instead.

Breathable Bio-Pur® foam: Amerisleep’s foam is 5 times more breathable than traditional foams, keeping you nice and cool. It bounces back to its original shape quickly, resisting sagging.

HIVE® technology: Named for its hive-like shape, HIVE® technology offers targeted support where you need it, like in your hips and spine, and softness where you don’t. HIVE® stands for Harnessing Intelligent Ventilation and Energy.

If you want a bouncier bed, Amerisleep also offers a hybrid version of the AS3. The AS3 Hybrid has the same Bio-Pur® foam comfort layer, with a pocketed coil support core. The bed’s coils are arranged to provide targeted back support.

This Labor Day, Amerisleep is offering a $450 discount on each of their advanced mattresses. This is a great time to save on a high-quality, supportive, and comfortable mattress.

The Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid sits 14 inches tall and has a soft, yet supported feel that is perfect for side sleepers. This mattress is designed to provide maximum cushioning to the joints to prevent pressure points. Plus, it has a responsive transition layer that reduces sinking so your spine always remains in a neutral position, allowing you can wake with fewer aches and pains.

Instead of a foam base, this hybrid has a base of pocketed spring coils that move independently of each other for less motion transfer and better contouring.

  • Top layer: Airy cover that won’t trapped heat, so you can sleep cool and comfortable.
  • Second layer: Plant-based Bio-Pur® layer contours to the body for pressure-free support.
  • Third layer: Active Flex foam keeps each area of the body lifted to prevent excessive sinking.
  • Base layer: Pocketed spring coils are zoned to provide more compression to sensitive areas like the hips and shoulders, but more support to the lumbar region.

The AS5 Hybrid comes with a 100-night sleep trial, which allows you to test out the mattress in the comfort of your own home. Amerisleep is happy to provide a full refund if it is not right for you. The quality and comfort of the AS5 Hybrid are backed by Amerisleep’s generous 20-year limited warranty. All Amerisleep mattresses are available for $450 off this Labor Day.

  • First layer: Soft and breathable AirCloth, a mesh fabric designed to remove heat and moisture.

  • Third layer: Responsive Reactiv™ foam that adapts to your movements. Reactiv™ foam helps the mattress snap back into shape as you move across it.

The GhostBed Luxe is our favorite offering from GhostBed this Labor Day weekend because of the bed’s plush, cool feel. Side sleepers lying down on the Luxe will feel the mattress embrace their bodies, molding to the curves for pressure relief.

The GhostBed Luxe has six layers, with a Ghost Ice fabric cover surrounding the various foams:

  • First layer: 1″ cooling fibers designed to boost airflow through the mattress. These fibers are sewn into the cover.
  • Second layer: 1″ gel memory foam for cool, contouring comfort.
  • Third layer: Ghost Ice layer helps the mattress stay cool to its core.
  • Fourth layer: 3″ gel memory foam to deepen the mattress’s compression
  • Fifth layer: Ghost Bounce layer to increase responsiveness. The material prevents sinkage with a feel similar to latex yet also provides pressure relief with a conformability that’s not unlike memory foam.
  • Sixth layer: 7.5″ high-density support foam to prevent sagging and provide structure and stability.

Making the Most of the Labor Day Sales

Shopping, especially for a new mattress, can be overwhelming. When you’re shopping during a big sale like Labor Day, it can be even more paralyzing. How can you tell if a good deal is really that good? And how do you know if the sales aren’t just a clever marketing ploy to get you to buy a mattress as soon as possible? We’ve compiled a few tips to boost your confidence as you start shopping for a new bed this Labor Day weekend:

Start early

Most sales start about a week or so before the actual holiday, and some even extend a few days past it, too. If you’re worried about missing out, you can always sign up for the company’s newsletter (if you’re shopping online mattresses), since they usually send out lots of updates and discount codes through the newsletter.

If you’d rather not subscribe to yet another email, we understand. Just start checking the websites a week before the holiday and look out for the discount codes.

Shop online

Maybe this is a no-brainer, but we do recommend that you look for deals online rather than in a brick and mortar store. Oftentimes the online discounts are steeper, and they also usually offer a sleep trial, giving you some extra peace of mind.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is…

While finding a good discount can make you feel like you’re on top of the world, watch out for promos that promise too much. For example: promo beds. Promo beds are offered with your mattress purchase and they are usually heavily discounted ($500 or less) or sometimes even free. It sounds really nice–who doesn’t want a free bed?–but these mattresses are usually low-quality.

Have a solid plan

Even though you’re shopping a sale with the assumption that you will save money, you can still fall prey to discounts that aren’t really discounts. For example, you might see language like “Buy two, get one free.”

If you weren’t planning on buying two beds in the first place, you won’t actually be saving money with this deal. It seems obvious, but it’s so easy to actually spend more than you were planning during a sale, so make a budget and stick to it.

Read mattress reviews

We’re going to assume you’re already doing this since you’re searching for the best Labor Day sales. You’re probably trying to conduct as much research as possible before making a big purchase, and paying attention to customer reviews is a natural part of that process.

Most online companies show off their highest reviews on the front page of the website, but make sure you read as many different ratings as you can, from 1 star to 5 stars. Sometimes bad reviews aren’t necessarily about the mattress–they can be about the delivery, customer service, return policy, or more.

Don’t fall for the first deal you see

You’ll probably be bombarded with dozens of sales and promos during Labor Day weekend, and it’s tempting to give in to the first good one you come across. After all, shopping is time-consuming and can be frustrating. Who wants to spend a ton of time on it? A mattress is one thing you don’t want to skimp on, so be thoughtful and shop around a bit before deciding on the best deal and mattress.

What other promos should you expect?

Besides a discount code, companies may offer other incentives to get you to purchase a mattress. Common promos include gift cards, freebies (like free pillows, sheets, mattress protectors, or other bedding accessories), rebates, or financing offers. Some places even offer mattress sets with an adjustable base as part of their promotion.

While more promos aren’t necessarily a bad thing, watch out for any deals that offer anything you don’t need. And if a company seems to be piling on the promos, that may be to overcompensate for the quality (or lack thereof) of their mattresses.

Become familiar with return policies and warranties

The return policy and warranty can tell you a lot about the company’s perception of its own product. If they offer a generous warranty (usually 10-20 years is the standard for mattresses), that essentially tells you how long they are willing to stand by their mattress.

Most warranties cover sagging (anywhere from .75”-1.5”), broken or burst coils, and defects in the foam, cover, or zipper beyond normal usage. Make sure you read the warranty’s fine print so you don’t unknowingly void the warranty later on (often by using an incompatible foundation).

The return policy usually corresponds with the sleep trial (if the company offers one) and they like you to try out the bed for a minimum number of nights–some require this minimum break-in period, while others simply recommend it. Sometimes, you might find that your mattress is just not the right fit for you and you want to return it before the minimum sleep trial is over.

Know Your Sleeping Position

Knowing your dominant sleep position will largely determine the type of mattress you like best. Most surveys conducted about sleeping positions have concluded that side sleeping is the preferred position for the majority of us. Whichever position you prefer, there’s most likely a mattress out there that’s made for you!

When you’re out hunting for the best Labor Day sales, keep your sleeping position in mind. We’ve outlined a few things each preferred sleep position should look for in a mattress:

Side sleepers

Look for a mattress for side sleeping with a softness rating of at least 5 or 6. If you can’t readily find the softness rating on the mattress website, use the contact form or chat feature. If you’re in a brick and mortar store, just ask the employees! If they can’t give you a definitive answer, you may want to look elsewhere for a mattress.

Side sleepers should shoot for a medium or medium-soft mattress since they need extra cushioning for their pressure points and support for their back and spine. For side sleepers, there is such a thing as a mattress that’s too soft. A soft mattress keeps them from waking up with stiff shoulders and sore hips.

Back sleepers

Back sleepers should look for a mattress with a softness rating of 6-7 or higher (medium-firm to firm). They need a firmer mattress than side sleepers because they’ll want to avoid that “sinking in” feeling as they lie down. Look for firm or medium-firm models to get a good night’s rest.

Stomach sleepers

Stomach sleepers are special–that’s because only 16 % of the population sleeps this way. But they don’t have to feel left out when it comes to finding the right mattress. Stomach sleepers can usually find comfort anywhere from medium-firm to extra firm mattresses. Additionally, stomach sleepers should also look for a good pillow, since they will need targeted support for their neck and head.

Combo sleepers

If you’re a combo sleeper, you might be wondering which mattress is best for you since so many mattresses only cater to one type of sleeper. The truth is, most combo sleepers still have a preferred position, and it’s whichever one you’re in upon waking up.

Try to strike a compromise by choosing a mattress for combination sleeping with the “medium” qualifier (medium-firm, medium-soft, or just medium). This will ensure you end up in a happy medium with your mattress.

Research Different Mattress Types

Of course, not all mattresses are the same, and different materials come with different price tags. It used to be that most mattresses were all made pretty much the same way–with springy coils that you could practically feel digging into your back as you lay in bed. Now, even innerspring coil beds have been affected by the “mattress revolution,” and it’s easy to find comfortable beds of all different makes, models, and prices.

Innerspring Mattress

Innerspring

An innerspring coil mattress is probably the one you’re used to–they are bouncy, usually last a long time, and they’re usually made with a comfort layer or pillowtop, so you can’t feel the coils. Some brands even make innerspring mattresses with individually wrapped coils, so you won’t feel your partner move around during the night.

Memory Foam Mattress

Foam

Foam mattresses are taking the sleep industry by storm. They have the highest customer satisfaction rating largely due to their comfortable feel and pressure-point relief. However, there are some drawbacks with memory foam–for example, some people complain of an off-gassing smell. The mattress we recommend (the Amerisleep AS3) is made with plant-based foam and low VOCs, so it should not have this problem.

Hybrid Mattress

Hybrid

Hybrid can be a confusing term, but at eachnight we will use it to define a mattress that’s 50% innerspring coil and 50% latex or foam. Hybrid mattresses are great for chronic pain sufferers, athletes, and those who simply want a little more support than an all-foam mattress can provide. Typically, the coils make up the core support layer, and the top comfort layer is made of foam or latex.

Latex Mattress

Latex

Latex models are a bit more expensive than the other types we’ve gone over, but that’s because of their durability. Latex mattresses last anywhere from 5-10 years longer than innerspring, foam, or hybrid models.

Latex comes from the sap of a rubber tree, and it has that familiar bouncy feel of innerspring but without the springs. There are two different latex manufacturing processes–Talalay and Dunlop. One is not necessarily better than the other, but they are slightly different and can create a different feel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do mattresses go on sale during Labor Day?

Yes! Many mattress brands discount their products on long weekends like Labor Day. If you’ve had your eye on a new bed, Labor Day is a great time to buy.

Who has the best prices on adjustable beds?

Online retailers offer the best deals on adjustable bed frames because they’re able to cut costs and sell direct-to-consumer. Some brick and mortar retailers may offer adjustable bed deals as well (i.e. free adjustable bed base with a mattress purchase, $500 off adjustable beds with mattress purchase), but these beds are usually very basic.

The adjustable beds sold by online mattress brands feature countless bells and whistles and are priced at a fraction of in-store models.

Who is having the best Labor Day mattress sale?

When shopping for a good bed this Labor Day, we suggest Amerisleep. This online mattress in a box brand offers their products at affordable prices, to begin with, and during big sales weekends, they’ll discount their beds even further—sometimes even offering $450 off! When comparing all mattress sales this Labor Day, we believe Amerisleep beds pack the most value.

What is the best mattress for side sleepers?

The best mattresses for side sleepers blend comfort and support to relieve pressure under the shoulders and hips while promoting a neutral sleeping position. We typically recommend medium mattresses for side sleepers, but medium-soft and medium-firm are also viable options depending on body type. When it comes to mattress type, choose memory foam, hybrid, or latex.

Where is the best place to get a new bed?

If you’re looking to save money, we suggest shopping online to cut costs. Online mattress brands offer better discounts and savings because they don’t have to worry about as many overhead costs (i.e. the costs that come with running brick and mortar stores), so they can price their products more affordably.

Conclusion: Did You Find the Best Deal?

Navigating big sales weekends can be exhausting if you don’t know all the mattress lingo or you’re just not sure if the deals being offered are worthwhile. We hope after reading this you’ve found the best mattress and corresponding deal for your needs and budget and you can finally get a good night’s sleep.
