The Amerisleep AS3 is one of the most durable mattresses out there. Made from plant-based memory foam, the AS3 has a medium feel. It’s a popular choice amongst side sleepers, combination sleepers, hot sleepers, and couples!

Amerisleep mattresses come with a 100-night sleep trial, a 20-year warranty, and free shipping and returns.

How Lying Down Feels

With the AS3’s medium feel, it gently cushions your hips, shoulders, and lower back depending on what position you sleep in.

Despite being an all-foam mattress, you won’t sink or feel “trapped” in the AS3. The foam springs back into shape when you move or get out of bed. The responsive qualities of the AS3 isolate motion as well so couples don’t disrupt each other at night.

What Testers Think

Morgan W – Boston, MA: After 5 years of testing, the Amerisleep mattress remains as comfortable as day one. As a meticulous tester, Morgan conducted thorough research considering factors like being made in the USA, non-toxic materials, absence of springs, durability, and positive reviews. Amerisleep stood out as the best choice, fulfilling all my criteria. Although there was an issue with the foundation, the prompt response and replacement from customer support resolved the issue. In conclusion, the Amerisleep mattress is a worthy investment.

Ricardo – New York: Reviewing the AS3 model, Ricardo found the Amerisleep mattress to be comfortable but too soft with limited motion isolation. The sinking sensation and lack of support led to hip pain, affecting both my and my wife’s sleep quality. Despite appreciating the absence of fiberglass and the initial coolness, the overall satisfaction with the mattress is compromised. Comparisons with a previous Nectar mattress highlight a compromise in sleep quality after the switch to Amerisleep.

Ligia – San Diego: Prompt delivery and immediate expansion marked the Amerisleep mattress’s arrival. Recognizing the high-quality materials, the mattress impressed with its quick inflation. Personally finding it too firm after the first night, Ligia eventually opted for a medium/soft/plush coil mattress due to post-childbirth back and shoulder discomfort. Despite this personal preference, the Amerisleep mattress stands out for its superior quality, and efficient shipping while testing, making it a solid choice for those who prefer memory foam.

Inside the Mattress

Inside the Amerisleep AS3 are three layers of foam. However, Amerisleep does offer a hybrid model of the AS3 as well. The AS3 Hybrid model contains a pocketed coil core rather than a foam base for extra bounce and breathability.

The standard AS3 features a Bio-Pur® comfort layer. Bio-Pur® is Amerisleep’s plant-based memory foam made from castor oil. Compared to most memory foams found in mattresses, Bio-Pur® is cool to the touch yet still cushions your body to relieve pressure.

Next is Affinity foam with HIVE® zoned support. HIVE® technology is divided into five ergonomic zones to evenly distribute your body weight, maximize spinal support, and cushion pressure points.

The base of the AS3 is made from Bio-Core® foam, which promotes healthy spinal alignment. Not only that, but Bio-Core® is highly durable and resistant to sagging, lumping, or going soft.

The foams inside of the Amerisleep AS3 are CertiPUR-US® certified, meaning they’re free of harmful chemicals and heavy metals. As a result, the bed won’t off-gas.

Pros

  • Durable after several years
  • Made in the USA
  • Efficient customer service

Cons

  • Limited motion isolation

What the testers say: “Despite my above-average weight, the mattress showed no signs of sagging or impressions during my 2 months of testing. The quality and durability exceeded my expectations. I was thoroughly impressed and couldn’t help but give it a perfect rating of 5 out of 5 for its material and construction.” – Dr. Colleen Ehrnstrom, Ph.D., AS3 Reviewer

If you’re physically active and looking for an all-foam mattress, the Zoma Start could be perfect for you. This mattress was designed with recovery in mind. From its breathable cover to its bouncy transition layer, this mattress was designed for people who are active while they’re awake and asleep alike.

A Zoma Start includes free delivery, a 100-night trial period, and a 10-year warranty.

How Lying Down Feels

The Zoma combines a breathable cover with gel memory foam and a responsive transition layer. This means you won’t have to deal with body impressions or overheating. Your sleep surface will stay cool and bounce back underneath you as soon as you move. The medium feel also offers versatile support to those who need it.

What Testers Think

Christian M. – Malden, Massachusetts: Having experienced a hectic life, Christian reported he can attest that the bed has played a significant role in managing my chaos over the past month. The quality of sleep has been unparalleled, earning it a solid 10 out of 10 rating. With the right room conditions and this bed, it promises a rejuvenating and restful sleep, making it a highly recommended choice for those seeking optimal sleep quality.

Christine – Port Saint Lucie, FL: In search of a suitable replacement for her teen son’s outgrown bed, Christine discovered the opportunity to test Zoma after careful consideration of reviews and return policies. The absence of fiberglass in their mattresses was a crucial factor in her decision, given the health concerns associated with such materials. Zoma’s American origin, fair return policy, and the helpful, friendly assistance from their representative further solidified her confidence in the purchase. The mattress, free from chemicals and unpleasant odors, arrived promptly, contributing to a positive experience. Despite the ongoing room renovation, her son finds comfort in the new mattress, emphasizing its comfort and safety, making it a reliable choice for concerned parents.

Uba – Los Angeles, CA: Uba reports that while the entry-level price is appealing, it’s important to note that the all-foam composition may not be ideal for hot weather. Residents in colder or temperate climates may find this mattress more suitable, especially if they don’t experience issues with sleeping hot. The affordability makes it an attractive option, with climate considerations being a key factor for potential buyers in warmer regions.

Inside the Mattress

The Zoma Start starts off with a cooling and breathable AirCloth cover that keeps air flowing underneath your body. This cover works with the gel memory foam comfort layer to move body heat away from you and keep your skin at the optimum sleep temperature.

Underneath the gel memory foam, the Reactiv™ transition layer helps the gel foam layer bounce back as soon as you move. This is perfect for those who like to toss and turn while they sleep.

Finally, the Support+ foam keeps your body lifted onto the sleep surface and creates a feel that’s on the firmer side of medium. This means back sleepers who want a little more cushion can enjoy this mattress.

Pros

  • Made in the USA
  • Limited off gassing
  • Great value priced mattress

Cons

  • Can sleep hot

What the testers say: “The base layer of the Zoma Start features Support+ foam, strategically engineered to resist sagging or impressions over time. This durability factor ensures that the Zoma Start mattress design translates into years of consistent comfort and reliable performance. This factor was especially important to me, as I have raised children of mine and worked with others and I know how active they can be, even with beds.” – Dr. Nilong Vyas MD, MPH, Zoma Start Reviewer

You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on a long-lasting mattress. The Vaya Hybrid is durable and high-quality yet still affordable. With its medium feel, the Vaya Hybrid provides optimal cushioning and support for side sleepers and support for stomach and back sleepers.

How Lying Down Feels

The Vaya Hybrid mattress conforms under your body’s curves without causing you to sink too much into your bed, which can make switching positions and getting in and out of bed difficult. Real Vaya Hybrid users describe the bed as being soft but supportive and nice for people who share a bed, as they don’t notice their restless partners moving at night.

What Testers Think

Cayetano A. – USA: The Hybrid mattress test was satisfying in terms of quality, but the experience was marred by incompetent customer service. Despite the explicit mention of free pillows on the product test page, they were never received. Multiple attempts to contact customer service with emails, screenshots, and links were met with no response over a period of three weeks, creating frustration and disappointment. The overall positive impression of the mattress is overshadowed by the lack of effective communication and unfulfilled promises, cautioning potential buyers to be wary of such issues.

Horace A. – USA: The Queen-size cloud mattress, received in March, has transformed sleep into a luxurious experience. The comfort of the mattress and the accompanying free pillows has led to a significant lifestyle shift, with the user joking they haven’t been to work since. The enthusiastic endorsement encourages potential buyers to invest with confidence, highlighting the remarkable comfort and satisfaction derived from the test.

ANGEL T. – USA: Fast and convenient shipping, coupled with easy unpacking, marked the positive aspects of the mattress-buying experience. Initially drawn to well-known brands like Tempurpedic and Sleep Number but deterred by high prices, the search led to the discovery of the Vaya mattress testing opportunity through a sibling’s purchase. Opting for the Hybrid mattress based on in-store trials, the firmness exceeded expectations initially. Despite this, the overall experience and pricing of the mattress are deemed satisfactory, providing a viable and more affordable alternative to pricier options in the market.

Inside the Mattress

The Vaya Hybrid features proprietary Vaya Comfort Foam, a cushiony foam excellent for pressure relief. Vaya Comfort Foam keeps your body lifted at night so you don’t feel stuck, along with dissipating heat and moisture to prevent overheating.

As a hybrid bed, the Vaya Hybrid contains a layer of individually pocketed coils. The coils closely support your spine for optimal spinal alignment, while the light fabric covering each coil reduces motion transfer, squeaks, and coil breakage. The coils on either side of the bed are reinforced so you don’t end up rolling off the bed.

The base of the mattress is a thin layer of foam. It maintains the mattress’s shape while being a surface for the coils to bounce off of.

The Amerisleep Organica is one of the most durable mattresses on the market. This eco-friendly mattress is filled with upcycled and organic materials perfect if you’re trying to reduce your carbon footprint. With the bed’s medium feel, it suits all types of sleepers as well.

How Lying Down Feels

The Amerisleep Organica offers a responsive medium feel that delicately contours to the body in most positions. The thick wool cradles the body, while the latex foam layers and pocketed coils provide gentle support.

What Testers Think

Fonzzzi – New Jersey: As a verified tester from New Jersey, Fonzzzi praises the Amerisleep Organica mattress. Highlighting features such as amazing support, comfort, durability, breathability, and being organic with no off-gassing smell, Fonzzzi deems it the perfect mattress. The positive endorsement, coupled with the five-star rating, positions the Amerisleep Organica as a highly recommended choice for those seeking an all-around excellent mattress.

TMK – Largo, FL: Overcoming initial concerns about an extensive in home test of a mattress without a showroom test, TMK relied on recommendations and chose the Amerisleep Organica mattress after extensive research. The decision proved fruitful as TMK found the mattress to be exactly what was desired—comfortable, satisfying, and meeting the criteria for both personal and spousal preferences. The latex organic mattress exceeded expectations, delivering consistent comfort, and a significant improvement in sleep quality. TMK not only expresses contentment but recommends the Amerisleep Organica for its superior quality and comfort.

Clarion – RI: As a verified tester from Rhode Island, Clarion offers a balanced perspective on the Amerisleep foam mattress. While acknowledging its fine quality, Clarion notes a similarity to traditional mattresses and box springs, making it an option comparable to higher-priced alternatives like Tempurpedic. The convenience of FedEx shipping is mentioned, but the heavy and difficult transportation of the queen-size mattress posed a challenge. Clarion suggests an option for in-home delivery and disposal of old mattresses for a more comprehensive service, pointing out potential improvements to enhance the overall customer experience.

Inside the Mattress

The Organica’s cover is made from GOTS® organic cotton. This crisp cover is cool to the touch and lasts for years. The cover features hand-tuft rosettes designed to keep the mattress’s layers together and minimize wear.

Directly beneath the cotton cover is a 1-inch layer of New Zealand Joma Wool®. Wool is a natural flame retardant, which means the mattress won’t need any other chemical retardants to meet industry standards. Also, wool regulates temperature, keeping you warm on cold nights and cool on hot nights.

Next is 3 inches of Talalay latex. It’s Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX®, Rainforest Alliance, and eco-INSTITUT certified. This natural latex contours under your body to relieve pain and pressure. When you move or get out of bed, the latex springs back into shape, minimizing sags and helping the mattress last longer.

Finally comes the pocketed coil support unit with fortified edges. The coils support your spine, keep your body lifted, and promote air circulation throughout the mattress. Under the coils is a 1-inch layer of Dunlop latex, a durable foam built to maintain the mattress’s shape.

What the testers say: “Altogether, I found that the natural latex and coil construction add up to a mattress that’s plush yet supportive and exceptionally bouncy, and the organic cotton cover was cool and gentle to the touch. And it doesn’t hurt that all Amerisleep mattresses have a 20-year warranty.” – Sharon Brandwein, Amerisleep Organica Reviewer

Saatva utilizes a dual-coil system made from tempered steel to prevent sagging, ensuring your mattress lasts for years to come. First comes a set of pocketed nano coils designed to cushion your curves, relieve pressure, and promote blood circulation. Next are large steel coils built to prevent wear and sagging. Both sets of coils help with airflow throughout the bed.

Additionally, she praises the Purple platform base, refuting claims of squeakiness, and expresses satisfaction with the durable Purple pillow received as a birthday gift.

Jodie T – USA: Jodie T, also from the USA, provides a mixed review of the Purple bedding products. She notes disappointment with the mattress protector, citing that it does not allow the mattress to breathe as advertised, leading to discomfort and sweating. Despite this, Jodie appreciates the durability of the Purple bed frame and expresses satisfaction with the Purple pillows. She acknowledges the firmness of the mattress and its inability to alleviate her back pain fully, offering an overall mixed sentiment about her purchase.

Ashley L – USA: Ashley L,  shares a positive experience after testing the Purple mattress for three weeks. She details the transformative impact on her sleep quality, with the elimination of shoulder and hip pain and no more night sweats. Ashley acknowledges the unique “grid”-like texture of the mattress, highlighting an initial adjustment period but ultimately praising its comfort. Expressing a desire for long-term durability, she concludes with a hopeful outlook on enjoying the mattress for the next decade.

Inside the Mattress

What makes the Purple Mattress stand out is the Purple Grid™ comfort layer. Purple Grid™ is a proprietary hyper-elastic polymer with grid-like cutouts. Unlike traditional memory foam, Purple Grid™ is flexible, responsive, and doesn’t grow soft or lumpy. Better yet, Purple Grid™ contains thousands of air channels to keep you cool all night.

Next is a sturdy polyurethane foam designed for optimal motion isolation and even weight distribution. This minimizes pressure points, helping you stay comfortable and sleep undisturbed.

The base layer of the Purple is a durable support foam. This layer promotes spinal alignment while preventing sags, soft spots, and other forms of wear.

How Long Do Different Types of Mattresses Last?

The type of mattress you have affects its lifespan, with most beds lasting between 7 to 10 years. Foam mattresses usually last the longest while coil mattresses have short lifespans.

Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses last for roughly 8 to 10 years before you need to replace them. They’re great for relieving pressure, but eventually develop lumps, soft spots, and indents. Most mattress warranties last around 10 years, so it’s worth having your memory foam mattress repaired or replaced before its warranty expires. This way, you can enjoy the mattress longer.

Some mattress brands may promote their memory foam as being high density, but high density is a buzzword that means little in the long-run.

Latex

Latex mattresses are the most durable type of mattress, lasting between 12 to 15 years. When it comes to finding a long-lasting latex mattress, make sure to go with natural latex over synthetic or blended.

Synthetic or blended latexes aren’t as durable as natural latex and contain potentially harmful chemicals. An organic latex mattress will have a high price tag, but it should last and last and last.

Innerspring

Innerspring mattresses are often known as budget beds as reflected by how long they last: roughly 5 to 7 years. The coils in innerspring beds are prone to snapping, growing weak, or ripping your mattress, while pillow tops can shift out of place and become lumpy. While more luxury innerspring beds last longer, be sure to find an innerspring bed with a good return policy.

Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses are one of the more expensive types of beds, though they don’t always last the longest. Hybrid mattresses last between 5 to 7 years, which is much shorter compared to foam mattresses. So although hybrid beds are a more luxurious type of bed, they don’t always offer the best bang for your buck.

How Often Should You Replace Your Mattress?

Not all of us remember exactly how old our beds are, especially after having them for a while. So, there are clear signs to look out for to know whether or not it’s time to replace out your current mattress:

  • You struggle to get comfortable at night
  • You always wake up achy and stiff
  • You sleep better in different beds
  • You wake up with small bite marks on your body
  • Your mattress has visible lumps, bumps, or an indent in the center
  • Your mattress is yellowing or discolored
  • Your mattress is over 8 to 10 years old

Does My Sleeping Position Affect Mattress Durability?

Can your favorite sleeping position impact a mattress’s lifespan? It is generally believed that mattresses last longer for back sleepers and stomach sleepers as their weight is more evenly distributed across the surface of the mattress. Side sleepers, on the other hand, tend to put more pressure on certain areas of the mattress, which can cause sagging and reduce the lifespan of the mattress.

However, when shopping for budget mattresses, proper mattress maintenance, such as regularly rotating the mattress and using a supportive foundation, can help extend the lifespan of the mattress, regardless of sleeping position. It’s also important to make sure you’re choosing a mattress firmness that corresponds with your sleeping position:

  • Mattresses for side sleeping often have soft to medium feels for maximum pressure relief.
  • Mattresses for back sleeping typically fall into the medium to firm range, with many of the best ones balancing medium-firm comfort.
  • Mattresses for stomach sleeping need to deliver supportive firm feels.
  • Mattresses for combination sleeping should offer a medium to medium-firm feel.

Can My Body Weight Impact Mattress Longevity?

Yes, body weight can affect how long a mattress is expected to last. Generally, the heavier a person is, the more stress and pressure they put on the mattress. This can cause the mattress to wear out more quickly and potentially lose its shape and support.

For example, a person who weighs 250 pounds may find that their mattress loses support and begins to sag after just a few years, while a person who weighs 150 pounds may be able to use the same mattress for a longer period of time without experiencing these issues.

If you are a heavier person, it is important to choose a mattress that is designed to support your weight and provides proper spinal alignment. Look for mattresses that are made with high-density foams or coils and have a thicker profile, as these tend to be more supportive and durable.

As with sleeping positions, you also need to choose a mattress firmness that ensures a comfortable mattress, as lightweight and plus-sized sleepers press down on a bed differently than ‘average’ sleepers:

  • Mattresses for lightweight sleepers should be in the softer end of the firmness range for their sleep position.
  • Mattresses for heavier sleepers should be in the firmer end of the range for their sleep position.

Ways to Help Your Mattress Last Longer

Even the best mattresses don’t last forever, but with proper maintenance, you can help extend their lifespans. Here are a few ways to keep your mattress sag-free and supportive!

Get the Right Foundation

A vital aspect to make your mattress last as long as possible is to use a good foundation. Mattress foundations include:

  • Box springs,
  • Slatted foundations, such as a traditional bed frame with bed slats
  • Solid foundations
  • Adjustable beds
  • Platform beds and floating beds

Mattress manufacturers will provide you with a list of suitable foundations for your bed when you purchase it. Using the wrong base voids mattress warranties and causes your bed to sag and wear down faster than normal.

Innerspring mattresses work well with box springs, slatted and solid foundations, and platform beds. Foam and hybrid mattresses work with practically any foundation except for box springs. With that in mind, if you choose any type of slatted foundation, be sure the slats are no further than 3 inches apart from each other to prevent the bed from sagging.

Always Use a Mattress Protector

From the moment you get a new mattress, it’s crucial to put a mattress protector over it. Next to using the proper foundation, a mattress protector is key to helping your mattress last. They look like a fitted bed sheet and have an elastic to secure them onto your bed. Conversely, some mattress protectors encase your entire bed and have a zipper enclosure.

Most mattress protectors are waterproof, keeping your mattress safe from spills, accidents, and other messes. With that, a mattress protector minimizes the amount of sweat, skin, and dust your mattress collects.

If there ever is an accident on your bed—or you just sweat a lot at night—it’s easy to pop off your mattress protector and toss it in the washing machine.

Regularly Wash Bedding

By keeping your bedding clean, you prevent bacteria from reaching your mattress. When you lie in bed, your bedding collects your hair, skin cells, sweat, dust, and other bacteria.

Your bedding includes your:

  • Pillows
  • Bed sheets
  • Blankets
  • Comforters
  • Duvets
  • Mattress pads
  • Mattress protectors

All of which have different care needs and guidelines:

  • For bed sheets, pillowcases, and mattress protectors, wash them about once a week.
  • Comforters and duvets inside a duvet cover need less-frequent care, only needing to be washed once a season.
  • Similarly, you can wash your pillow two to four times a year.

Do you have a pillow that can’t be washed? You can still touch it up by spot cleaning it. For example, while you can wash certain memory foam pillows, while others must be gently spot cleaned.

When it comes to washing your bedding, we typically recommend more frequent washes if you have allergies.

Rotate Your Mattress

You may have heard of flipping or rotating your mattress to help it last longer, but flipping is an uncommon practice nowadays. Most mattresses have a top-down construction, so if you flipped them over, they’d be unusable and break down rapidly. Rotating your mattress 180 degrees is the modern alternative.

Now, not all mattresses even need to be rotated, but manufacturers will specify this so you don’t have to put in any extra work. Otherwise, we recommend rotating your mattress bi-yearly to evenly distribute wear and ensure the bed doesn’t develop a large indent in the center.

Clean Your Mattress Correctly

Another way to help your mattress last longer is by cleaning it—more importantly, you must clean the mattress correctly. Now, you can’t just toss a mattress into the washing machine the same way you can with some bedsheets and pillows. Instead, your mattress’s manufacturer will likely provide guidelines on how to properly clean your bed.

Follow your manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. If you wash your mattress incorrectly, it can void the manufacturer’s warranty. Without a good mattress warranty, you’ll be in charge of paying mattress repairs and replacements in full.

While the exact guidelines manufacturers offer differ slightly, the cleaning instructions follow the same basic structure:

  • Spot clean stains with a soap and water solution as needed
  • Vacuum each side of your mattress every 1 to 3 months
  • Strip your mattress and let it sit in a sunny spot indoors for 1 to 3 hours

By keeping your mattress clean, you minimize the risk of bed bugs, dust, allergens, and other bacteria building up.

FAQs

What mattress lasts the longest?

There’s not one specific mattress that lasts longer than every other bed on the market. Still, we find latex mattresses and mattresses with latex foam last the longest in general due to the utter strength of latex. For example, a great hybrid mattress made with latex is the Amerisleep Organica.

What type of mattress is least likely to sag?

Latex mattresses are the least likely type of mattress to sag. Not only are latex beds uniquely durable, but they spring back into shape instantly when you get in and out of bed. This minimizes the amount of sagging in a latex mattress. Hybrid mattresses with latex comfort layers may also experience minimal sagging, though hybrid beds don’t last very long.

Do foam or spring mattresses last longer?

Foam mattresses last longer than spring mattresses. Most spring mattresses only last between 5 to 7 years, while foam beds can last up to 15 years depending on the type of foam.

If you still prefer spring mattresses, we suggest going with a hybrid mattress. They contain pocketed coils that reduce the springs from wearing down or breaking. While this may help the mattress last longer, it’s not a guarantee that it’ll compare to a foam mattress.

Can I fix a sagging mattress?

Even the most durable mattresses sag with age. Your best route is to get one with a good mattress warranty so you can have it repaired or replaced at a reasonable cost. Besides that, there’s not much you can do to make a sagging mattress as good as new. Still, there are ways to minimize the saggy feel and get a few more years out of your mattress.

If your mattress is only slightly saggy or has only developed a few soft spots, you can get away with using a mattress topper over the bed. Another option is to place a slab of plywood or a bunkie board beneath your mattress to help firm it up. A firm to extra-firm mattress will feel more supportive and less saggy. Even with proper care, all beds sag and you’ll eventually need to replace your mattress.

Can a saggy mattress cause back pain?

Yes, if your mattress is sagging, it won’t properly support you and your back. Without proper support, your back and spine won’t stay aligned, causing pain and stiffness. As we’ve mentioned, there’s little you can do to restore a sagging mattress, so it’s best to replace the mattress to resolve your bad back.

Conclusion

Not all mattresses last forever, but getting a durable bed with high-quality materials means it’ll last longer, ultimately saving you money. When getting a durable mattress, make sure it comes with a long, well-rounded warranty policy—10 years or more is ideal. This way, if your mattress does wear down, you can have it repaired or replaced for a small fee, if not completely for free!
