Best Columbus Day Mattress Sales: Reviews and Buyer’s Guide

by Jasmin Lee Comment on Best Columbus Day Mattress Sales: Reviews and Buyer’s Guide
Updated January 7, 2021

Columbus Day, sometimes called Indigenous Peoples’ Day, is one of the best days to buy a new mattress. It’s also one of the last big sale events of the entire year. Next is Black Friday and Cyber Monday. After that, most mattress sales won’t start up again until New Year’s Day or Presidents Day next year.

Our guide spotlights the best Columbus Day deals from three mattress brands. We also have a section with tips to make the most of your shopping experience.

Best Columbus Day Mattress Sale

  • Best Overall: Amerisleep AS3
  • Best Hybrid Mattress: Amerisleep AS5H
  • Best Memory Foam: Zoma Mattress
  • Best Cooling Mattress: Zoma Hybrid
  • Best Budget Mattress: Vaya Mattress

Amerisleep

While there’s a mattress out there for everyone, there’s no one mattress perfect for all sleepers. Shopping for the best mattress can’t be that simple because of different sleep needs:

  • Favorite sleep positions
  • Body types
  • Medical conditions
  • Personal preferences

Amerisleep makes things easier by offering eight mattresses in five different firmnesses.

Amerisleep has five memory foam mattresses and three hybrid counterparts. They are categorized as follows:

  • The AS1 is only available as a memory foam mattress. It has a firm feel that’s perfect for stomach sleepers and select back sleepers.
  • The AS2 is a medium-firm mattress, available as both a memory foam bed and a hybrid mattress. It’s good for back sleepers, with a firmness that can help relieve chronic back pain.
  • The AS3 has a medium feel suitable for side and combination sleepers. It’s also Amerisleep’s most popular mattress model, with more than 6,500 reviews. You can choose the classic memory foam mattress or go with the new hybrid model.
  • The AS4 is a medium-soft option that’s excellent for side sleepers.
  • The AS5 mattress is Amerisleep’s softest bed, available in memory foam or as a hybrid. It’s one of the rare soft mattresses we recommend for heavy sleepers, thanks to its supportive transition layers and base layer.

All Amerisleep mattresses contain a top layer of Bio-Pur® foam. The material is more responsive and breathable than traditional memory foam. Bio-Pur® foam is an eco-friendly choice because it’s partly made with castor oil.

Amerisleep’s foams are certified safe by CertiPUR-US®. They’re free of toxic materials such as mercury, lead, and formaldehyde, and they contain low amounts of VOCs.

Every Amerisleep mattress purchase includes free shipping, a 100-night sleep trial, and a generous 20-year warranty.

Amerisleep also sells three different memory foam pillows, sheets, comforters and duvet covers, a mattress foundation, adjustable bed bases, mattress toppers, and a waterproof mattress protector. If you wish, you can upgrade your entire bed this Columbus Day.

Amerisleep will offer 30 percent off their mattresses during Columbus Day sales.

Zoma

Zoma MattressZoma focuses on restorative recovery with its mattresses. You can choose from two models, the classic memory foam Zoma Mattress or the newer Zoma Hybrid.

Both beds have a top layer of cooling gel memory foam. Any aches and pains you develop throughout the day are soothed when you lie down. The material molds to you for full-body support and pressure relief. The infused gels keep the surface at an ideal temperature by dispersing body heat across the mattress.

Underneath the gel foam is a layer of Reactiv™ foam, a responsive material that adds supportive pushback to the mattress. Reactiv™ lifts you, preventing you from sinking in too deep and misaligning your spine. The material also makes it easier to move across the bed’s surface.

Zoma offers $150 off all its mattresses during their Columbus Day sale. Every mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty. Other products to consider include:

  • The original Zoma Pillow, a shredded memory foam pillow that adapts to your movements
  • The Zoma Body Pillow, perfect for side sleepers who want an all-in-one pillow
  • The Zoma Foundation, a simple and supportive structure
  • The Zoma Adjustable Bed, with customizable comfort

Vaya

Vaya King Size MattressVaya is a relative newcomer on the mattress scene, but we already love their beds that offer pure comfort at an affordable price.

The 12-inch Vaya Mattress has a basic design, with a conforming top foam layer and a supportive base layer. The top layer of Vaya Comfort relieves pressure and keeps cool throughout the night. The bottom layer of Vaya Base Foam supports you in any sleeping position.

Vaya also sells inexpensive queen and king size pillows. You receive an additional discount if you buy two pillows instead of one. The Vaya Pillow has a cooling design that molds to your head and shoulders in any sleep position.

During Vaya’s Columbus Day mattress sales, you will receive $300 off any mattress.

Columbus Day Buyer’s Guide

Before you commit to a mattress, do your homework. Check out presale information and establish what your preferences and budget are before shopping.

When comparing mattresses, don’t just look at features. Check the bed’s warranty and return policy, too.

Scope Out Sales Early

Many companies will advertise their mattress deals ahead of time, and some may even begin discounting items as early as a week in advance. If you don’t see any advertisements, try reaching out to the company and asking about potential discounts.

Establish a Budget Beforehand

Before you look at sales, picture how much you want to spend. For example, many quality queen mattresses cost roughly $1,000 to $2,000, depending on materials and thickness.

Know Your Sleep Preferences

Comparing mattresses can feel overwhelming if you’re unsure what the right mattress needs to have.

Here’s a quick cheat sheet for different sleeping styles:

  • A mattress for side sleepers should have a soft to medium feel for maximum pressure relief. Otherwise, side sleepers might wake up with sore hips and stiff shoulders.
  • A good mattress for back sleeping has a medium-firm to firm feel, providing support and preventing back pain.
  • We do not recommend stomach sleeping because the position is tied to chronic back pain. That said, a mattress for stomach sleeping should have a firm feel to prevent excess sinkage and spinal misalignment.
  • If you switch between two or three sleep positions, you’re a combination sleeper. A medium feel mattress for combination sleeping can adequately support you in all positions. Motion isolation features are also helpful, particularly if you share the bed.
  • A heavy sleeper (over 230 pounds) benefits from a mattress with a firm feel. Firm mattresses withstand compression well and limit sinkage that could cause pain and back problems.
  • A mattress for a petite sleeper (under 130 pounds) should have a softer feel than the average bed. For example, a lightweight back sleeper might want to try a medium mattress with targeted back support. Soft mattresses ensure that a small sleeper experiences the full pressure relief they need.

Check Return Policies

Most modern mattresses, particularly online mattresses, come with a sleep trial. Within a sleep trial, you have a few months to try out a mattress at home and make sure it’s the right mattress for you. A budget mattress may not include a full sleep trial, but a decent mattress should still have a 30-day return policy. A short return policy still allows you time to gauge if a mattress feels comfortable.

Read Through Warranties

Most warranties cover at least 10 years in the mattress industry. Some companies offer 15, 20, or even 25-year warranties. If a warranty is less than 10 years long, it might mean that the mattress contains low-quality materials unlikely to last a full decade.

Perhaps even more important than coverage length is understanding what the warranty covers. For example, how deep a mattress must sag before it’s under warranty varies by mattress companies. Some companies will offer a repair or replacement when sagging is under an inch. Other companies require sagging to exceed an inch or even two inches.

Even minimal sagging can cause an uncomfortable night’s rest, so we suggest shopping for a mattress warranty that covers sags less than an inch. This limit often signifies a durable mattress.

We strongly recommend against buying a mattress, pillow, bed frame, or adjustable base without a warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need a box spring with a mattress?

It’s unlikely that you’ll need a box spring with a modern mattress. Box springs were once paired with a traditional innerspring mattress to absorb shock and increase the bed’s comfort, support, and height.

However, foam and hybrid mattresses don’t require a box spring to feel comfortable and supportive. You can even damage your mattress by leaving it on a box spring. The coils inside are far enough apart that sections of the mattress can sink between, damaging the bed’s materials and compromising its feel.

How thick should a mattress be?

We suggest avoiding mattresses thinner than 10 inches. Thin beds have less material for support and comfort, so you’re unlikely to sleep as well as you would on a thick mattress. The added material in a thick mattress also creates more durability, giving the mattress more value for its price.

Do you really have to wait 48 hours for memory foam to expand?

No, you can sleep on your bed in a box mattress before it finishes expanding. However, the bed may not feel as great as it will once it’s regained its full shape. If you can, set up a new mattress in the morning—by evening, it should be almost if not fully expanded and provide a comfortable night’s rest.

How do I choose a mattress topper?

If your bed feels too soft or firm, you can improve its feel with a mattress topper. To choose the correct mattress topper, think about your sleeping style. If you’re a side sleeper, you’ll want a soft, thick topper to provide pressure relief. If you’re a stomach or back sleeper, you’ll want a firm topper for back support.

A topper is an excellent way to stretch out your mattress’s lifespan. However, if your mattress is in poor condition, you might be better off buying a new one.

What time of year are the best sales on mattresses?

Aside from Columbus Day sales, you’ll find mattresses discounted during Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, the Fourth of July, and Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Here are the dates of the bigger mattress sales days:

  • Presidents Day is the third Monday in February
  • Memorial Day is the last Monday of May
  • The Fourth of July is self-explanatory
  • Labor Day is the first Monday in September
  • Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving
  • Cyber Monday is the Monday after Thanksgiving
