Graphic showing the top superfoods across the nation

Food and health trends fluctuate and evolve with time, just like anything else. Our food choices are influenced by trends and current events, which is why people have been looking for immunity boosting health foods as the coronavirus has become such a factor in our lives.

Typically, trendy healthy options have been classified under the broad term of “superfood” referring to the great health benefits of adding them to your diet, but more often these days, people are searching for the types of foods they can eat to stay healthy and avoid illnesses. At eachnight, we’re huge proponents of living a healthy life beyond just having great sleep habits. We thought it would be interesting to find out how each state is buying into specific superfood trends, and that’s exactly what we did! We compiled a list of trendy superfoods for 2023; using Google Trends, we examined which superfoods and immunity-boosting foods are most popular across the United States based on Google Search volume. The results are below.

Map showing the most searched superfoods in each state

Based on Google Trends data, these are the most popular superfoods in every state. Sweet potatoes are having a major moment according to search volume. Meanwhile, chia seeds and greek yogurt are definitely in vogue, possibly because they’re so great to eat together. Of course, some of the results were for less mainstream food.

Bone broth is cool again in Montana, and Tennessee is wild about elderberry syrup. People in Utah are keeping an open mind about hemp hearts, and the folks in Nevada are very into maca powder.

US map showing the most popular superfoods by region

There were a few regional trends in the top-searched item by state. Both the Midwest and the South were looking for sweet potatoes. The Northeast is wild about arugula, and the West is adding chia seeds to their diet. Of course, those weren’t the only popular superfoods in the region. In second place for the Midwest and the Northeast was greek yogurt. The South had chia seeds as their second most searched item, and the West saw sweet potatoes as their second top searched item.

Top Searched Super Foods in the US

Sweet potatoes were by far the winner for superfood searches in the US. In a whopping 17 states, they were the top searched item. Chia seeds and greek yogurt were tied with 6 states apiece, followed by arugula in third place with 3 states searching for it the most. Blackberries, coconut, and collard greens had 2 states apiece, and the final 13 superfoods were only top searched in 1 state.

Wondering what superfoods were top 3 in your state? Check out our interactive map below:

In light of recent events, everyone is looking for ways to boost their immune system and stay healthy. While the quarantine has presented a significant policy to support this, there are always ways you can enhance your own immunity and keep yourself at low risk for all illnesses, including the coronavirus. We looked at the top searched immunity-boosting foods in every state and the results are below… apparently people are eating a lot more oranges!

Of course, here at eachnight, we take a good night’s sleep very seriously. But building healthy sleep habits goes far beyond making sure that you schedule enough time for sleeping every night. It means eating well, staying active, and maintaining smart habits beyond the moment where you actually go to bed. If you’re looking for ways to create the best environment for sleeping, you can check out some great techniques here.

Excellent. This inspired me to add chia seeds to my mango sorbet. Btw, I think sesame seeds are big in jersey because of middle easterners who live here. I would not have thought of them as a superfood except for your take on it and google trends evidence—as healthy as they may be!
