With the GhostBed All-in-One Foundation™’s 2,000-pound weight limit, you don’t have to worry about this metal frame not supporting you.

The GhostBed All-in-One Foundation™ is made entirely of metal. The frame includes an upholstered cover you can slip on if you want a sleeker look, but it isn’t necessary. Plus, there are optional headboard brackets you can attach if you have a headboard or choose to buy one down the road.

The foundation is 9 inches thick and can be placed in a separate bed frame. If you’d prefer to use the All-in-One Foundation™ on its own, attach the six metal legs to it for some extra height. You can adjust the two-piece legs to be either 3 or 6 inches tall depending on how many inches of clearance you prefer.

How Do Platform Beds Compare to Other Foundations?

When it comes to mattress foundations, some common options include slatted or solid foundations, bunkie boards, box springs, adjustable beds, and platform beds. Platform beds are arguably the most cost-effective mattress foundation out there.

Nearly all other mattress foundations are bland and unattractive, meaning you’ll likely want a bed frame to go with them. Platform beds are mattress foundations that look like decorative bed frames, so you only need to buy one item rather than two.

How to Choose a Platform Bed

If you’ve decided a platform bed is right for you, there are several things to look for in one. Decide what material and height you want, and then figure out how much you’re willing to pay for a platform bed frame.

Materials

Your platform bed’s materials make the biggest impact on its appearance, durability, and performance. The most common platform bed materials are wood, steel, upholstered fabric, particleboard, or faux leather.

Regardless of what materials you prefer, most of the foundations have wood or metal slats as they are the most durable and reliable. Some slats may be wrapped in fabric to keep the slats in place and prevent wear, but it’s usually a durable material, not a luxury leather or decorative fabric.

Height

Bed height isn’t a factor most of us think about, but the elderly and people with limited mobility need beds that aren’t overly tall or short to ensure it’s not difficult to access. If you have any type of mobility issues, your bed should be just tall enough for your feet to be fully flat on the floor when sitting on the edge of it. For most people, the best bed height is roughly 25 inches.

Platform beds tend to be shorter than other bed frames, which is known as being low-profile. The average low-profile platform bed is around 12 to 18 inches tall, but different frames come in different heights to suit your need.

Price

Not everyone has the same budget for their mattress’s foundation and that’s why platform beds have such a wide selection of prices. Some platform beds can cost as little as $100, while others cost over $1000. A platform bed’s price varies based on its size, material, and any extra components it may have, such as storage space or a trundle bed.

Generally, you can find a high-quality platform bed for between $200 to $500.

Mattresses for Platform Beds

The best mattresses for platform beds include:

  • Memory foam mattresses
  • Hybrid mattresses
  • Innerspring mattresses
  • Latex mattresses

Unique mattress types, such as waterbeds or air mattresses, won’t pair with platform beds as they require specific foundations.

You should be able to place your mattress directly on the platform bed frame. The only potential exception is a traditional innerspring mattress, which may benefit from being placed on a box spring. For more info about platform beds and box springs, read Platform Bed vs. Box Spring.

FAQs

What are the pros and cons of a platform bed?

There are a lot of pros and cons to platform beds, including:

Pros:

  • Acts as both a bed frame and mattress foundation
  • Available in a wide range of styles
  • Work with most types of beds
  • Promote air circulation
  • Many styles have extra storage space and optional footboards or headboards
  • Cost-effective

Cons:

  • Too close to the ground for some people
  • Difficult to transport
  • Not all beds have high weight capacities

Can you put a regular mattress on a platform bed?

Yes, practically all types of beds work with a platform bed. Still, it’s essential to always check with your mattress’s manufacturer to ensure it works with a platform bed. Using the wrong foundation for your mattress causes it to wear down rapidly and voids its warranty.

Is it okay to put a box spring on a platform bed?

Technically, you can put a box spring on a platform bed, but it’s not necessary. First off, box springs are foundations only suitable for innerspring beds. Unless you have an innerspring mattress, you can skip the box spring altogether. Secondly, platform beds have slats that act as mattress foundations, so you won’t need a second foundation such as a box spring.

The only occasion where you might place a box spring on your platform bed is if the frame is too short for your needs. A box spring adds extra height to your bed so it’ll be easier to access.

How thick should a mattress be for a platform bed?

There’s no specific optimal thickness for platform beds. However, your bed should be no less than roughly 10 inches so you don’t risk bottoming out and feeling the rails beneath you. At the same time, a mattress thicker than 18 inches will make your platform bed extremely tall. An overly tall bed is difficult to get in and out of, particularly for people with limited mobility.

Is it hard to move a platform bed?

Most platform beds weigh less than 100 pounds, so they shouldn’t be difficult to push if you ever choose to rearrange your bedroom. Since platform beds are large, they’ll be difficult to move into another room or home without disassembling them. Still, most platform beds are easy to disassemble and reassemble, so it isn’t necessarily a terrible inconvenience.

Conclusion

Platform beds make a great statement piece for any bedroom, plus they save you money on buying an additional foundation for your bed. Most platform beds assemble in 30 minutes or less and require no tools, so you don’t need to be construction-savvy, either. Considering all the benefits of a platform bed, there’s all the more reason to purchase one.
