Updated January 4, 2023

The Purple Mattress lineup seems to be everywhere these days! Purple Mattress commercials are all over TV, and their ads are all over the internet. However, an aggressive marketing campaign doesn’t make a great product. Not to say that the Purple Mattress lineup is bad. Quite the contrary. How Lying Down Feels

If you like the bounce and coolness of the Purple hyper-elastic polymer but don’t like the feel of the Purple Grid, you may like the feel of the Saatva Zenhaven. The Saatva perforated Talalay latex is just as breathable and bouncy as the grid in the Purple Mattress, just without the grid feel.

Inside the Mattress

The Saatva Zenhaven starts off with an organic cotton cover and a layer of organic wool that acts as a temperature regulator and natural fire barrier. The Saatva Zenhaven then features a comfort layer of all-natural Talalay latex. This layer offers five different zones of support, so each body area gets the lift and comfort it needs.

How To Choose The Right Purple Mattress Alternative

Choosing a new bed can be confusing if you don’t know what you’re doing. The good news is you don’t have to do tons of research or learn the ins and outs of the whole bedding industry. You just need to know two things: your sleep style and body type.

Firmness Level

The firmness of all modern mattresses is measured using a scale of one through 10, with one being the softest. Most of the time, you won’t find mattresses softer than a three or harder than an eight. Mattresses that are extremely soft or extremely hard are not comfortable for just about anybody.

The most popular mattress firmnesses are medium-soft through medium-firm mattresses. These mattresses offer an excellent balance of cushioning and support that works for most sleepers. However, there are circumstances where you’ll need a soft or a firm mattress.

Sleep Position

Your sleep position is the main factor that decides your firmness needs. It decides what kind of support and pressure relief you need and where you need it.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers need the softest beds. Side sleeping means your body weight presses your hip and shoulder joints into the bed. Firmer mattresses push back. That means the pressure of a too firm mattress is exerted on your joints, and this pressure can turn into waking up with pain every morning.

Softer mattresses for side sleeping absorb the pressure of your body weight and protect your joints from pain.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers face a different issue than side sleepers. A stomach sleeper can experience lower back pain because sleeping on your stomach causes your pelvis to sink into the bed. This overarches your spine and can cause back pain. A firm mattress for stomach sleeping will counter this pelvic sinkage and help to keep your spine aligned.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers need medium-firm mattresses because these mattresses offer the right balance of firmness and support to keep the spine aligned. When you lie on your back, you need a mattress for back sleeping that can keep you lifted onto the sleeping surface as well as fill in your lumbar region to keep your spine in a neutral position.

Combination Sleepers

Combo sleepers like to switch things up. They don’t have a strong preference for any sleep position and may choose any one.

When you’re such an active sleeper, you need a versatile mattress for combination sleeping that can support you in any position. Medium mattresses usually fit this bill, as they’re made to be comfortable for the widest variety of sleepers.

Body Type

Your body type impacts your firmness needs somewhat but not as much as your sleep position. Your sleep position decides what firmness baseline you have, and you can increase or decrease from there based on which weight category best fits you.

Average Weight Sleepers

Those who are between 130 and 230 pounds are considered average weight. Most US mattress companies make their beds with this weight category in mind because the average adult falls somewhere between those two numbers. That means if you’re in this weight category, you can generally go with the firmness level that fits your sleep style without worrying about weight.

Heavier Sleepers

Heavier sleepers normally need to go up a firmness level to get enough support. If you weigh over 230 pounds, the mattress that matches your sleep style may not offer quite enough lift to keep you from sinking into your bed. Going up a firmness level in a mattress for heavy people can keep you lifted onto the sleeping surface and your spine aligned.

Petite Sleepers

Petite sleepers tend to have the opposite problem as heavier sleepers. Those under 130 pounds may not exert enough force on the bed to get sufficient contouring. This can leave them feeling like they’re sleeping on a slab, unless they have a mattress for lightweight sleepers.

Getting a bed that’s one firmness level softer than the one that corresponds to your sleep style can help you get the cushioning you need if you’re lighter.

Couples’ Considerations

Couples may have a problem sleeping in the same bed if they’re different sizes or have very different sleep styles. Not all couples fall into the same weight category and possess similar sleep styles, after all. Those who shop for a mattress for couples can normally find a compromise on firmness and material that fits both partners.

However, a heavier stomach sleeper and a petite side sleeper probably won’t be able to share the same mattress. But they can still share the same bed. They just need a split king size mattress. A split king allows you to put two separate twin XL mattresses in the same king bed frame. That lets you share a bed without sharing a mattress.

Material and Construction

All mattress types come in a variety of firmness levels. So you can get the right firmness level to fit your needs, no matter what material you choose. That means your personal preferences have the most impact on your choice of material.

Memory Foam

Memory foam is made of a special type of flexible polyurethane foam that was originally designed by NASA to cushion pilots during flight. However, as soon as the recipe for memory foam went public, it exploded in popularity as a bedding material.

The reasons why become clear as soon as you lie down on a memory foam mattress. Memory foam mattresses cradle your pressure points and flow with the shape of your body to offer you customized support and pressure relief. This makes memory foam an amazing option for all sleeping positions.

Memory foam isn’t just comfortable. It’s also affordable and durable. The only real drawbacks are its slow response time and heat retention. If you like to toss and turn, you may not appreciate how long it takes pure memory foam to bounce back when they move.

Even though modern memory foams can include things like gel and graphite infusions to cool them down more than traditional memory foam. However, even gel memory foam and open-cell memory foam don’t regulate their temperature, as well as some of the other materials on this list.

Latex Foam

Latex foam is a processed form of natural rubber tree sap. The liquid sap can be spun into two basic varieties of natural latex foam: Talalay and Dunlop. Dunlop latex is the densest and most durable of the two varieties. So it’s a good option for those looking for lots of support.

Talalay is springier and more contouring. So if you’re looking for a natural foam that’s comparable to memory foam, Talalay latex is your best bet. It’s not as durable as Dunlop, but it’s a bit more contouring and cradling.

Both varieties of natural latex have a lot going for them. Latex is also a lot more cooling than memory foam. So even the hottest sleepers can get a good night’s sleep on a latex mattress.

Latex is also a much more responsive foam than memory foam. That will be pleasing to most active sleepers because they won’t have to wait for a latex mattress to regain its shape. The only drawback to this is that latex is not quite as contouring as memory foam because it wants to retain its own shape.

SEE ALSO: Memory Foam vs. Latex: What’s the Difference?

Innerspring

Innerspring mattresses have coil cores and thinner comfort layers made of a variety of materials like wool, cotton, fiberfill, and foam. Most of the time, innerspring beds typically feature open-coil cores, meaning the coils are wired together and have no case. Open coil cores are extremely cooling and responsive, but they create a lot of problems.

The fact that open coils are wired together means they cannot contour the way that the support cores of other mattress types. They tend to sag under the heaviest parts of your body rather than following your natural curves.

Innerspring comfort layers also don’t do a very good job protecting you from pressure exerted by the coil core. The only exception to this would be if the innerspring mattress has a pillow top or Euro top. Pillow tops are a layer of extra padding that goes on top of the comfort layer. Pillow tops can come on any mattress type, but they’re most common on innerspring beds.

Innerspring mattresses are a good choice if you want a cheaper bed that’s easy to move around, and the well-made ones can be excellent for shoppers seeking mattresses under $1000.

But innerspring mattresses are not always the most comfortable or the most supportive option. That’s why we recommend going with a hybrid mattress if you want a mattress with coils.

SEE ALSO: Hybrid vs. Innerspring Mattresses: What’s the Difference?

Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses are a more modern take on innerspring mattresses, and they solve a lot of the issues that innerspring beds have. These hybrid mattresses still feature a coil support core. But instead of open coils, hybrids have individually wrapped coils called pocketed coils. A pocketed coil support layer is advantageous for several reasons.

Pocketed coils are not wired together. So they can move independently of one another. This translates into a mattress that can contour all the way through in a way that open coils and even support foams just can’t.

Pocketed coils also offer all the responsiveness of open coils and none of the motion transfer. Because pocketed coils can move independently, they bounce back under you without transferring your motion all over the bed.

Hybrid mattresses also feature a foam comfort layer that’s at least two inches thick. This comfort layer can be made of memory foam or latex foam, allowing you to get the feel you want out of your mattress.

The main drawback of hybrids is their price. They’re much more expensive than innerspring and memory foam mattresses. And they’re almost expensive as latex mattresses, but they’re not as durable. That means hybrids are the most expensive mattress type over time.

Saving on Purple Mattress Alternatives

Purple is primarily an online mattress company. They have some stores but only in a few select cities. That means their prices are competitive because they don’t have the kind of overhead that big-box mattress stores do. However, there are still some things you can do to save on Purple alternatives.

Hitting the regular mattress sales that happen throughout the year is perhaps the biggest way to save on any mattress. There are several great sales throughout the year, and they tend to fall around long weekends and other major days off.

The biggest mattress sales include:

  • Best Presidents Day Mattress Sales
  • Best Memorial Day Mattress Sales
  • Best 4th of July Mattress Sales
  • Best Labor Day Mattress Sales
  • Best Columbus Day Mattress Sales
  • Best Black Friday Mattress Sales
  • Best Cyber Monday Mattress Sales

Aside from sales, there are also good seasons to shop. For instance, later in the winter is a good time to snag a deal because sellers are trying to get rid of returns and burn through inventory that didn’t sell at Christmas. Spring is another of the best times to buy a mattress because sellers are trying to get rid of older models to make room for new stuff that comes out in summer.

FAQs

What if the Purple Grid just isn’t for me?

The Purple Grid offers a grid pattern of air channels that looks a lot like an open egg carton. This gel grid is made of a hyper-elastic polymer known as GelFlex material. This material makes the top of every mattress in the Purple lineup extremely cooling and responsive.

However, the Purple Grid isn’t for everyone. Some people find it messes with the firmness of the mattress, and others can feel it through the cover. If you can’t get used to the Grid, you can try gel foam or latex foam. These foams are still cooling and responsive, but they have a more traditional feel.

What is the best Purple Mattress alternative for side sleepers?

Side sleepers need lots of contouring and pressure relief to protect sensitive shoulder and hip joints from pain. That means the best alternative to the Purple Mattress for side sleepers is the Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid. This mattress is soft enough to offer sufficient pressure relief to even petite side sleepers.

The great thing about the AS5 Hybrid is it also comes in a straight-foam version. So if you’re not looking for a hybrid mattress for side sleeping, you can get all the comfort of the AS5 in a memory foam mattress.

Which mattress material is best for hot sleepers?

Hot sleepers have a couple of fantastic choices when it comes to cooling materials. Likely the best cooling foam for hot sleepers is latex. Natural latex foam is breathable to wick away body heat and sweat. It can also help naturally conduct heat away from you without the need for chemical infusions.

If you have a latex allergy or can’t afford expensive latex, gel foam is another good choice. A gel memory foam mattress won’t be as cooling as a latex mattress. But gel memory foam is still a cooler alternative to regular memory foam because it can conduct heat away from your body.

Hybrid mattresses are another great choice for hot sleepers. Their open coil systems circulate air through the entire mattress. Combine that with gel memory foam or latex foam, and you’ve got one cool mattress!

What’s the best Purple Hybrid mattress alternative?

That depends on what you need out of your mattress. If you need a mattress with a touch of firmness, the Zoma Hybrid could be a good choice. This cooling and supportive mattress is perfect for back and side sleepers looking for a hybrid mattress.

Those who need a softer Purple Hybrid alternative should consider the Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid mattress. This hybrid mattress still offers all the lift and bounce of coils, but it features several layers of foam to cushion and cradle your pressure points. This makes the AS5 Hybrid the perfect choice for side sleepers and petite sleepers.

What’s the best Purple Mattress alternative overall?

The best overall Purple Mattress alternative is the AS3 by Amerisleep. This ultra-versatile mattress offers the perfect balance of comfort and support for almost anyone. Its medium feel offers couples and combo sleepers tons of lift and pressure relief at the same time.

The responsive, plant-based foam is fantastic for sleepers who love to toss and turn. And the breathable foam is cooling enough for hot sleepers. Just like the original Purple Mattress, the AS3 is truly a mattress for everyone. Like the Purple Mattress, it’s also a mattress without fiberglass.

Bottom Line

There are tons of fantastic options out there if you want an alternative to the Purple Mattress lineup. Just remember, as long as you keep your body type and sleep style in mind, you can pick the right new mattress for your needs at the right price no matter what mattress-in-a-box brand you choose!
