From the first moment I sank into it, I could tell this mattress was different. It’s not just about comfort; it’s about feeling taken care of. That Sweet Spot of FirmnessYou know when Goldilocks found the bed that was just right? That’s exactly how I felt. The AS3 Hybrid has this perfect medium firmness—soft enough to feel cozy but firm enough to keep me supported. Whether I was lying flat or propping myself up to read, it felt like the mattress had my back (literally).Sinking In Without Getting StuckEver slept on a mattress where you feel like you were wrestling to get out? Not here. The top foam layer gently hugged my body, especially around my hips and shoulders. The springs underneath added a little bounce, so switching positions—whether sitting up or stretching out—was effortless.Seriously, it’s the best of both worlds: cushioning when you need it, but with enough support to keep you from sinking in too far.Strong Edge Support (Yes, It Matters!)Let’s talk edges—because, trust me, they matter more than you think. When I sat or leaned on the edge (because who doesn’t do that?), it didn’t feel like I was about to slide off. The reinforced perimeter made it sturdy and stable. Plus, it gave me extra usable space, which is a win if you like sprawling out or sharing the bed.Cool as a CucumberRaise your hand if you hate waking up in a sweat (me too!). The AS3 Hybrid delivers on cooling. The breathable foam layer feels fresh to the touch. The built-in airflow from the springs helps regulate temperature all night long.Even during a marathon Netflix session or a warm night, I stayed perfectly cool and comfortable. No Bouncing AroundIf you share your bed, this is a game-changer. I tested how much motion traveled across the mattress, and honestly? Almost nothing.I could roll over or sit up without causing a ripple. Your partner could toss and turn like a washing machine, and you’d still sleep soundly. All in all, lying down on the AS3 Hybrid felt like an experience. Whether I was reclining with a book, propped up to catch a show, or lying flat to drift off to sleep, the mattress delivered that perfect mix of comfort and support every time. It’s one of those things you don’t appreciate until you’ve tried it for yourself—and trust me, it’s worth it. The moment my body made contact, I felt a gentle embrace from the Vaya Comfort Foam. It cradled my curves just right, providing a plush sensation that made me feel like I was sinking into a cozy cloud. Yet, it wasn’t so soft that I lost all sense of support; instead, it offered that perfect balance of comfort and stability. When I lay on my side, the mattress hugged my shoulders and hips, allowing my spine to maintain its natural alignment. As someone who often shifts between sleeping positions—sometimes on my side, other times on my back—I was eager to see how the Vaya would accommodate my needs. I could feel the pressure dissipating, which is crucial for side sleepers like me. It felt like the mattress was designed with my comfort in mind! The mattress conformed to my body while still providing enough lift to keep my spine aligned. When I switched to my back, I noticed how the medium firmness kept me well-supported without feeling rigid. For stomach sleepers, though, I could see how they might find it a tad too plush. But for combination sleepers like myself, this mattress truly shines. The responsiveness of the mattress was one feature that truly caught my attention. As I rolled over and shifted positions throughout the night, the Vaya bounced back quickly without any noticeable delay. It felt as if it was anticipating my movements, which is essential for maintaining comfort and support during sleep. This responsiveness earned high marks in my book—a solid 9 out of 10!Sharing a bed means considering how well a mattress manages motion transfer and space. With the Vaya, I barely noticed any disturbance when my partner moved around—this mattress excels in isolating motion! It scored a fantastic 9 out of 10 in this category, making it ideal for couples who want to enjoy uninterrupted sleep. However, when I tested the edge support by sitting near the perimeter, I did notice some sinkage. While it wasn’t alarming, it was enough to rank edge support at 7 out of 10. If you tend to sleep or sit near the edge frequently, this is something to remember.I felt the coolness of the foam and the stretch-knit cover as soon as I lay down. Excellent ventilation made possible by the open-cell construction kept me comfortable all night long, preventing me from having to remove my covers to avoid overheating. This function is revolutionary for someone like me who gets overheated when sleeping! I would give it an outstanding eight out of ten for cooling capabilities. Tester FeedbackKatherine A. shared her experience, stating, “Firm mattress without nonsense. Best price for firm mattresses without frills with great warranty.” She emphasized that the Vaya is an excellent choice for side or back sleepers, highlighting its straightforward design and effectiveness.Melanie H. also chimed in with her thoughts: “As for the mattress, I will say I am pretty comfy. I am not sleeping hot anymore, which was my biggest issue.” While she noted some lingering back pain, she attributed that to factors beyond the mattress itself, saying, “If I ever need another mattress, I will most likely buy it from Vaya.” This sentiment aligns with Dr. Jordan Burns’ expert assessment, who found the Vaya to provide a medium-firm feel (6 out of 10), making it suitable for a variety of sleeping positions.Another user, who has dealt with old sports injuries, remarked, “One month in, I’m not having the same pain in the mornings I used to.” This shows the mattress’s ability to alleviate discomfort for many users. However, they did note some off-gassing that took about a week and a half to dissipate but found it manageable. Inside the MattressComfort Layer: Vaya Comfort FoamAt the top of the mattress lies a 3-inch layer of Vaya Comfort Foam. This proprietary polyfoam is engineered to capture the best qualities of both memory foam and latex while avoiding their common drawbacks. The open-cell structure of this foam allows for excellent airflow, which helps dissipate heat and maintain a comfortable sleeping temperature.Pressure Relief: When I lay down on this layer, I immediately felt it contouring my body, providing targeted pressure relief around my shoulders and hips. This is particularly beneficial for side sleepers who need that extra cushioning to avoid discomfort.Responsiveness: Unlike traditional memory foam that can feel like quicksand, the Vaya Comfort Foam has a bouncier feel. It responds quickly to movement, making it easy to change positions without feeling trapped in the mattress.Support Layer: Vaya Base FoamBeneath the comfort layer is a 9-inch layer of high-density Vaya Base Foam. It prevents sagging and maintains proper spinal alignment, which is crucial for avoiding back pain during sleep.Bounce and Stability: The base foam also contributes to the mattress’s overall bounce, allowing for easier movement on its surface. This makes it easy to pick the level of support that suits your sitting (or sleeping) style. One of our favorite features is the Saatva Classic’s edge support. It keeps you feeling stable and secure even when you’re sitting right at the edge, which is perfect for those who tend to perch on the side of the bed.We noticed the mattress’s breathable design helps regulate temperature. The coils allow for airflow, which keeps the mattress cooler, so you won’t get too warm when you’re sitting up for a while. In our tests, the Saatva Classic definitely earned its place as one of the best mattresses for sitting up in bed. If you’re after something that supports you well and keeps you comfortable for hours, it’s definitely worth considering! 9.2 Overall Score 7 Value 10 Edge Support 10 Trial Period 10 Response Time 9 Motion Transfer 9 Cooling & Breathability How Lying Down FeelsOkay, so let me tell you about the Saatva Classic—I tried it out, and wow, I was impressed! So, I tested the Luxury Firm version, and honestly, it felt like the perfect balance between comfy and supportive. When I lay down, it was like the mattress just knew exactly how to support my back without being too stiff. You know how some firm mattresses feel like you’re sleeping on a board? Yeah, this wasn’t like that at all—it was firm, but also soft enough to make me feel like I was sinking into a cloud, just the right amount. What I really loved was how it responded to my movements. When I shifted from my side to my back, the mattress adjusted instantly. It wasn’t like I had to “work” to get comfortable. It had a little bounce to it, which sounds weird, but it actually made it so easy to change positions without feeling stuck. Now, here’s the kicker—the edge support. I’m the type who sits on the edge of the bed all the time, so I hate when the edges feel like they’re about to swallow me up. Not with the Saatva Classic! It has these reinforced edges, and I didn’t feel like I was going to roll off at all. I could even sit on the edge without any problem—super stable. And I’ve gotta mention the cooling. Even though it has that plush pillow top, it didn’t trap heat. I’m someone who tends to get warm at night, but this mattress kept things breathable, and I didn’t wake up sweating. So yeah, lying down on the Saatva Classic was honestly a great experience. It gave me that perfect mix of support and comfort, and I felt like I could just lie there all night. If you’re looking for a mattress that’s great for both sitting up and actually sleeping, this one’s definitely worth checking out! Tester FeedbackThe Saatva Classic was commended by Dr. Jordan Burns for providing pleasant yet solid support that ensures optimal spinal alignment. It is ideal for couples because of its minimum motion transfer and sensitive innerspring system, which makes movement effortless. He also emphasized its great cooling qualities, which provide a pleasant and breathable sleeping environment, and its sturdy edge support, which is ideal for sitting or resting close to the edges.Users have highlighted several key features that contribute to its appeal:Supportive Firmness: One user noted, “The mattress has enough resilience so that shoulders and hips don’t sink in too much, providing a balanced support.” This aligns with the Saatva Classic’s medium-firm feel, offering a supportive surface suitable for various sleeping positions. Pressure Relief: Another reviewer mentioned, “All of our testers found that their spine and pressure points – including shoulders, hips, and knees – felt cushioned and supported, with their weight distributed evenly across the mattress.” This reflects the mattress’s ability to alleviate pressure points, enhancing sleep quality. Edge Support: A tester remarked, “The Saatva Classic has the best edge support and I don’t get to say that too often while testing mattresses.” This highlights the mattress’s reinforced edge support system, which combines coils and firm polyfoam to provide stability when sitting or lying near the edge. Cooling Properties: Users have observed, “I really did feel cool when resting on it,” and “The Saatva Classic is one of the best cooling mattresses.” These comments underscore the mattress’s breathable design, promoting airflow and temperature regulation for a comfortable sleep environment. Inside the MattressThe Euro pillow top adds a plush feel while maintaining a cleaner, flatter look compared to traditional pillow tops. Think of this as your first layer of comfort. It’s quilted for extra softness and provides that cozy, inviting touch as soon as you lie down.Supportive Memory Foam Layer: Beneath the pillow top is a layer of memory foam that offers targeted lumbar support. It’s particularly effective for relieving pressure on your lower back, ensuring optimal spinal alignment.Responsive Comfort Coils: Individually wrapped coils in the comfort layer are designed to contour your body, offering customized support and reducing motion transfer—great for couples who don’t want to disturb each other’s sleep. At the heart of the mattress is a durable steel coil base. This foundation ensures long-lasting support and prevents sagging over time, making the Saatva Classic as sturdy as it is comfortable. The edge support system is a game-changer. It’s bolstered with high-density foam that keeps the edges firm and supportive, whether sitting, lying near the edge, or simply maximizing the full surface of the mattress. The breathable, hypoallergenic cover is made from certified organic cotton. It feels soft and luxurious, and it promotes airflow, keeping you cool throughout the night. This thoughtful layering is why the Saatva Classic stands out—not just for sitting up in bed but for overall sleep quality. Every layer is designed with a purpose, making it a luxurious yet practical choice for anyone seeking the perfect blend of comfort and support. Thanks to the breathable organic cotton cover and wool layer, the Organica keeps sleepers cool and comfortable throughout the night—perfect for those who tend to overheat. Inside the MattressLet’s take a journey inside the Amerisleep Organica, peeling back its layers to see what makes it so special. Imagine unzipping the cover and discovering how each thoughtfully chosen material works together to deliver the perfect balance of comfort, support, and sustainability. Organic Cotton Cover: The Soft EmbraceThe first thing you’ll notice is the luxurious organic cotton cover. It feels soft and breathable, almost like your favorite T-shirt, but sturdier and designed to last. This cover isn’t just about comfort; it’s GOTS-certified, meaning it’s free from harmful chemicals and produced sustainably. It also helps with airflow, keeping the mattress surface cool and inviting. Joma Wool: Nature’s Temperature RegulatorJust beneath the cotton lies a layer of Joma wool, acting as the mattress’s natural climate control. This layer wicks away moisture and allows air to circulate freely, making it ideal for those who sleep hot or live in warmer climates. It also serves as a natural fire barrier—no chemical additives are needed here. Natural Talalay Latex: Buoyant and SupportiveNext, we get to the heart of the mattress: a 3-inch layer of 100% natural Talalay latex. This is where the magic happens. The latex feels buoyant, almost springy, providing a sense of weightlessness that supports every curve of your body. It’s not too firm or soft—just right for maintaining spinal alignment while relieving pressure on your shoulders, hips, and back. And since it’s naturally responsive, it adapts instantly to your movements, so you’ll never feel stuck. Pocketed Coils: Stability and Targeted SupportBeneath the latex is a layer of individually wrapped pocketed coils. These coils are what keep the mattress steady and supportive, even as you shift positions or sit on the edge. They’re arranged in zones to provide targeted support where you need it most—firmer under your lower back and softer near your shoulders. This layer also reduces motion transfer, so you can sleep soundly even if your partner is tossing and turning. Dunlop Latex Base: The FoundationFinally, at the bottom, there’s a layer of Dunlop latex. This layer gives the mattress its structure and durability, acting as a solid foundation that ensures the Organica remains supportive for years to come. Dunlop latex is denser than Talalay, which makes it perfect for creating a sturdy, long-lasting base. We tested it thoroughly and found that its design works well for lounging, reading, or working comfortably. This mattress is 10 inches thick and made with three layers of foam. The top layer is gel-infused memory foam, which adapts to your body for comfort while keeping you cool. Beneath that is a layer of responsive foam that helps you move easily, and the sturdy base layer ensures durability and support. We rated it as medium-firm, around 6.5 out of 10, which means it feels balanced—not too soft, not too firm. When sitting up, the mattress provides just the right level of support to keep you comfortable without sinking too much. Its breathable cover adds a soft, fresh feel, which is a bonus for long-sitting sessions. One of the best things about the Zoma Start is its affordability. A queen-size model costs just $562, which is a fantastic deal for a mattress that performs this well. It’s comfortable, supportive, and designed to last, making it perfect for anyone who likes spending time propped up in bed. If you’re looking for a quality mattress without a high price tag, the Zoma Start is a solid pick. 9.2 Overall Score 10 Value 10 Edge Support 9 Trial Period 8 Response Time 9 Motion Transfer 9 Cooling & Breathability How Lying Down FeelsThe Zoma Start appeared to conform to every curve of my body when I was lying down, creating a perfect balance between comfort and support. I immediately felt the memory foam with gel infusions enveloping me in a gentle embrace that didn’t suffocate me. You feel held but not glued with this type of contouring. It was just the right amount of firm—not too stiff to feel unyielding, nor too soft to have me sink.I spent a good deal of time testing different sleep positions, and it was surprising how well it adjusted each time I moved. While it didn’t have the springiness of a hybrid mattress, the memory foam responded quicker than I expected, making it easy to shift positions without feeling like I was dragging myself out of quicksand. That slightly slower response felt soothing, almost like the mattress was pausing to say, “I’ve got you,” before settling into just the right amount of support.I gave it the ultimate test by tossing and turning a bit more than usual, and the motion transfer was nearly nonexistent. For couples, this is a huge plus—you could probably jump into bed and not disturb someone sound asleep next to you.The cooling layer was another detail I appreciated. Memory foam can sometimes feel too warm, but the Zoma Start stayed cool and breathable. I noticed the airflow as I lay there, even with blankets piled on top, and it felt refreshing rather than stifling. If I had to pick one area where the mattress showed its foam nature, it would be the edge support. Sitting or lying right on the edge didn’t feel as firm as I’d hoped, but it didn’t take away from how great the rest of the surface felt. Lying down on the Zoma Start felt like a thoughtful mix of relaxation and practicality—perfect for anyone who needs a bed that can keep up with sitting, lounging, and sleeping in comfort. Tester FeedbackDr. Jordan Burns, a respected sleep expert, has spoken highly of the Zoma Start Mattress, emphasizing its effective edge support, cooling capabilities, and balanced medium-firm feel. According to him, the Zoma Start is designed to cater to a wide range of sleepers, combining comfort and practicality. One happy customer raved, “I’ve had my Zoma for six months, and it’s the best mattress I’ve ever had. It’s very comfortable, breathable, transfers weight well, and was super easy to set up.” This review highlights some of the mattress’s standout features, like its gel-infused memory foam, which keeps the surface cool and helps distribute weight evenly.Another user added, “The Zoma mattress may be on the firmer side since it only has a 2-inch comfort layer, but compared to my old mattress, I find it much comfier.” This reflects Zoma Start’s medium-firm design, which provides the perfect balance of contouring and support. It’s a great option for anyone who prefers a supportive surface that doesn’t feel overly soft or plush. Many reviewers also praised the mattress for its motion isolation, with one stating, “I share the bed with my partner, and we never feel each other move. It’s been a game-changer for both of us!” One reviewer mentioned, “I used to wake up hot every night, but with the Zoma Start, I stay cool and comfortable until morning.” The gel-infused foam and breathable cover shine here, addressing one of the most common concerns with memory foam mattresses. Inside the MattressThe top layer is crafted with gel-infused memory foam, designed to cradle your body while keeping you cool. This layer contours to your unique shape, providing relief for pressure points like your shoulders and hips. What sets it apart is the infusion of cooling gel, which actively works to disperse heat and maintain a comfortable sleep temperature. For anyone who’s experienced the “oven effect” of traditional memory foam, this layer feels like a breath of fresh air.Beyond cooling, this layer ensures that sitting up in bed feels supportive yet cushioned. Whether you’re leaning against pillows to read or lounging with your laptop, the memory foam adapts to your posture without creating uncomfortable pressure spots.Beneath the comfort layer lies a transition layer made of responsive poly foam. This material acts as a buffer between the soft memory foam above and the firm support foam below. It provides a gentle push-back to prevent excessive sinking, making it easier to move around and change positions. This layer is particularly valuable when sitting up, as it adds just the right amount of firmness to keep you from feeling like you’re collapsing into the mattress. It also enhances the overall resilience of the surface, so the mattress quickly adjusts to your movements, whether you’re lying flat or shifting positions. The foundation of the Zoma Start is its thick, high-density support foam, which provides the mattress with stability and durability. This layer is designed to evenly distribute weight and maintain the mattress’s shape over time, even with frequent use.For those who spend significant time sitting up in bed, this sturdy base ensures you won’t experience sagging or a lack of support. It’s the backbone of the mattress, offering a solid foundation that complements the comfort and transition layers perfectly.Breathable Cover Wrapping it all together is a lightweight, breathable cover that enhances airflow and keeps the surface feeling fresh. The stretchy material moves seamlessly with the foam layers, ensuring that the mattress maintains its comfort and responsiveness throughout the night. The foams seemed to adjust to my body shape, offering relief from pressure while keeping my spine aligned. While the bed could feel firm, I woke up with no aches and pains nor did I ever experience major stiffness and soreness from lying down.” – Dr. Nilong Vyas MD, MPH, Zoma Start Reviewer Read Our Full Review of the Zoma Start Mattress 10. Couples can customize their side of the bed according to their individual preferences without compromising on comfort. For example, one partner may prefer a softer feel while the other opts for a firmer surface—all without creating any noticeable gap between them.We examined the innovative design of the Sparrow, which features a removable comfort layer that allows users to switch between different firmness levels—Plush, Medium, and Firm—at no additional cost. This unique feature not only enhances the mattress’s longevity through Nest’s Lifetime Renewal Exchange program but also accommodates changing preferences over time. Tester FeedbackUser ExperiencesEllie shared, “We purchased a king-size Nest Sparrow for my husband and me. After sleeping on a too-firm mattress for years, the Sparrow was a game changer. The plush feel is just right for both of us, and I love that we can customize the firmness!” This reflects the mattress’s versatility as described by Dr. Burns as well, as it comes in three firmness options—Plush, Medium, and Firm.Manthana noted, “I can’t believe how little I feel my partner moving at night! Inside the MattressThe Purple Restore Plus Hybrid is expertly crafted with multiple layers designed to provide optimal comfort, cooling, and support for sleepers. Here’s a breakdown of its innovative construction:Stretchy Antimicrobial Cover: The mattress starts with a soft, stretchy cover infused with antimicrobial and moisture-wicking properties. This cover helps keep the surface fresh while maximizing the performance of the inner layers.Purple GelFlex® Grid: At the core of the mattress is the signature GelFlex Grid, a hyper-elastic polymer layer with open-air channels. This grid promotes airflow, helping to keep you cool while providing dynamic pressure relief as it adapts to your body’s movements. It ensures proper support regardless of your sleeping position, offering both comfort and alignment.Transitional Foam Layers: Surrounding the grid are transitional foam layers that enhance durability and bolster edge support. These layers ensure that the mattress maintains its structure over time and provide support across the entire surface, including the edges.Ventilated Comfort Foam: Beneath the grid lies a layer of comfort foam that’s ventilated for additional airflow, helping to regulate temperature. This foam also contours to your body, delivering superior pressure relief.Pocketed Coils: At the base of the mattress, the 6-inch layer of pocketed coils offers targeted support through three distinct zones: head, back, and legs. These individually wrapped coils contour to your body, providing reinforced support and helping to maintain proper spinal alignment throughout the night. The combination of these advanced materials and construction techniques makes the Purple Restore Plus Hybrid a standout mattress for those seeking innovative support and cooling in a comfortable, durable design. The mattress had a distinct feel due to the Purple Grid technology, which balanced firm support and adaptive comfort and is suitable for various sleeping positions.” – Dr. Jordan Burns, Purple® Restore Plus Hybrid Reviewer Read Our Full Review of the Purple Restore Plus Hybrid Mattress How to Choose the Best Mattress for Sitting UpFinding the best mattress for sitting up and lying down can be a little more complicated than finding a mattress that you’re only going to sleep on because you have to think about how your body presses on the mattress in two different positions. When you’re lying down, your body weight is distributed over more surface area, which compresses the mattress less. When you’re sitting up, that same body weight is distributed over less surface area. This means you’ll need a mattress that won’t sag and can handle the extra pressure as well as keep you comfortable while you sleep.Don’t feel discouraged. There are lots of durable mattresses that are up to the task. You just need to know which firmnesses and materials are best.SEE ALSO: Best 10 Inch MattressIdeal Mattress Materials for Sitting Up in BedWhen you’re sitting up in bed, you’ll want a mattress material that offers lots of buoyancy and lift to ensure you don’t sink into the mattress while at the same time providing enough pressure relief and contouring to ensure that you don’t suffer pain while you’re sitting up in bed. The good news is there are several types of mattresses that fit this bill.Memory FoamMemory foam is manufactured using processed petroleum products to create a synthetic foam known as flexible polyurethane. This is one of the most popular bedding materials on the market because of its superior pressure relief, motion isolation, and adaptability.A memory foam mattress is a perfectly adequate material for sitting up in bed, though it may not be the absolute best one. Memory foam is the most contouring of all mattress materials. This makes it one of the best mattress materials for sleeping. But the same adaptability that makes memory foam so great for lying down may make it a little less so for sitting up.Memory foam molds itself to your shape in a way that other mattress materials can’t. This means when you sit up, it may compress more than you like underneath the added body weight. If you need a soft mattress, such as if you’re a side sleeper or a petite sleeper, this problem could be even more pronounced. All this isn’t to say that you shouldn’t get a memory foam mattress if that is what you want. Memory foam is an excellent choice for sleeping because it provides unbeatable compression, establishing an excellent mattress for pressure point relief. Just be aware that you may need to use pillows or other implements to make sitting up on a memory foam mattress more comfortable.Latex FoamThose who want an all-foam mattress that is ideal for both lying down and sitting up may want to check out natural latex instead of memory foam. Natural latex comes from the sap of the rubber tree. This sap can be whipped into two different types of latex foam: Dunlop and Talalay. Both of these latex types come from the same liquid sap. The manufacturing process is what creates the distinction between them. Dunlop is denser and more buoyant, while a Talalay latex mattress is lighter and more contouring.Regardless of the type of latex you choose, natural latex wants to maintain its own shape more than memory foam does. This makes a latex mattress more buoyant and more responsive than memory foam, which can mean it’s a better choice for sitting up in bed because it will keep you better supported in a seated position and bounce back quicker when you move. The biggest problems with a latex mattress are that it can trigger allergy symptoms in people who are sensitive to latex, and it is not a budget-friendly material. Natural latex is the most durable of all mattress materials, but its initial price is also the highest of all the most common bedding materials. This means an organic latex mattress is not the most expensive mattress type over the course of its long lifetime, but it will hurt you in the wallet when you first purchase it. This cost can be prohibitive for some people.SEE ALSO: Memory Foam vs. Latex: What’s the Difference?HybridHybrid mattresses are another fantastic option for both lying down and sitting up in bed. Hybrids employ a pocketed coil support system and feature at least two inches of comfort foam on top of these coils. This creates a mattress that offers the responsiveness of coils and the pressure relief of foam.Pocketed coils all move independently of one another, which allows them to adapt to your shape better than support foam can. At the same time, pocketed coils are also much more responsive than support foam. So you don’t have to wait for body impressions to clear when you move.Plus, the wrappings around the coils and the thick foam tops establish excellent mattresses for motion isolation. This combination of support and responsiveness is fantastic for lying down and sitting up alike.Hybrid mattresses will offer a lot more buoyancy and support for sitting up in bed than straight memory foam mattresses can. They’re also less expensive upfront than latex mattresses. You have to take the reduced initial cost of a hybrid mattress with a grain of salt, though.Hybrid mattresses have coils inside them, and these coils lose tension and break down much faster than latex support foam wears out. This means a hybrid mattress will need to be replaced more frequently than a latex mattress. And this, in turn, means that hybrid mattresses are more expensive over the course of their lifespans than latex mattresses. You may have to replace a hybrid mattress once or even twice before you replace a latex one. Still, for many, a hybrid is the most comfortable mattress when it comes to daytime and nighttime use.InnerspringWhen it comes to sitting up and lying down in bed, innerspring mattresses are the worst mattress type for both. All the problems inherent to an innerspring mattress come from its open coil support core.Open coils, unlike pocketed coils, are not individually wrapped. Rather, they are unencased and wired together using steel cables. This creates a support system that cannot contour as well as pocketed coils or base foam.Open coils tend to sag under the heavier parts of your body instead of molding themselves to your shape. Open coils are also infamous for exerting lots of pressure, so they cannot relieve your pressure points as other support systems can. This makes innerspring mattresses a poor choice for lying down. The motion transfer issues inherent in innerspring mattresses are why they’re not good for sitting up, either. When you sit up in bed, you may have food or drink or other items with you.Every time you move on an innerspring mattress, the open coil system will amplify your motion and transfer it all over the bed. This can result in more spills and accidents, as well as a constant minor annoyance as your body gets bounced around.Furthermore, innerspring mattresses are not compatible with adjustable beds. The open coil support core in an innerspring mattress is too stiff to move and flex with an adjustable base. The coils will either float over the base as it moves out of the flat position, or the mattress itself may break. This means you’re stuck with piling pillows behind you if you want to sit up in bed on an innerspring mattress. For all of these reasons, we recommend a hybrid mattress to those who want a coil support system.SEE ALSO: Best King Size MattressIdeal Mattress Firmness for Sitting Up in BedA mattress’s firmness is typically measured on a scale of one to 10, with 10 being the firmest. Usually, you will never find mattresses softer than around a three or firmer than around an eight because mattresses on the extreme ends of the spectrum would have either insufficient support or insufficient compression.Sitting up in bed may impact your mattress firmness needs. When you sit up, your body weight is distributed over a much smaller surface area than it is when you’re lying down. This means that sitting up exerts much more pressure on a mattress than lying down does. This, in turn, would mean that firmer mattresses are better for sitting up in bed because they can offer more support to your body in that position. However, a mattress’s primary purpose isn’t sitting up. It’s sleeping. This means you’ll need to focus first on finding a mattress firmness that fits your sleep style and body type and then worry about finding a mattress firmness that is good for sitting up in bed.Sleep PositionYour sleep position is the number one factor that impacts your firmness needs. Your preferred sleep position dictates how your spine lines up, how your body contacts the bed, and where your pressure points are. This means it should be your main focus when you’re looking at mattress firmnesses.Back SleepersBack sleepers have potentially the easiest time finding a good mattress firmness for sitting up in bed because they already need the ideal firmness for this. When you sleep on your back, a mattress for back sleeping should offer a combination of pressure relief and support that slightly favors support. This way, you get enough contouring for the mattress to compress underneath your buttocks and rise to support the lumbar region. At the same time, you get enough buoyancy to prevent you from sinking into the sleep surface, which can misalign the spine. This means back sleepers need medium-firm mattresses (6 of 10), which are incidentally among the best mattresses for sitting up in bed.Combo SleepersCombo sleepers may have a bit harder go of it when it comes to finding a good mattress firmness for sitting up in bed because they need medium mattresses (5), which are not quite as ideal for sitting up in bed. Medium mattresses for combination sleeping are still perfectly adequate for sitting up in bed, but their extra pressure relief may translate into less support when your body weight is not as evenly distributed. However, this does not mean you should choose a firmer mattress to sit up in bed. You should always choose the mattress that works for your sleep position. In this case, medium mattresses offer enough versatility to accommodate combination sleepers in whichever position they choose to adopt on a given night. So if you don’t have a strong preference for any one sleep position, go for a medium mattress.Side SleepersSide sleepers may have the hardest time finding a good mattress for sitting up in bed because they need the softest mattresses of all. When you sleep on your side, your body weight presses your hip and shoulder joints into the mattress. A mattress that pushes back against these joints will exert pressure and cause pain. This means side sleepers need softer mattresses for side sleeping. On the other hand, if you spend a lot of time sitting up in bed, you’ll want a mattress with extra support for when your body weight is more concentrated. In this case, you may want to consider a medium-soft (4) to medium mattress as a compromise because side sleeping is less compatible with sitting up in bed.Stomach SleepersAs a general rule, stomach sleepers need firm mattresses (7) to keep their spines aligned. Sleeping on your stomach allows your pelvis to sink into the sleep surface. This can overarch the spine and cause pain in the lumbar region. Firm mattresses or even extra firm mattresses counter this issue by keeping the pelvis lifted and ensuring the spine is aligned. On the flip side, firm mattresses may exert too much pressure when you sit up in bed, and this can lead to pain in the buttocks or lower back. Since you still need a firm mattress for stomach sleeping, you may want to grab a pillow or a cushion for sitting up in bed.Body TypeYour body type does not always impact your firmness needs. The only time it does is if you fall outside of the mattress industry’s definition of the average human weight range of 130 to 230 pounds. In this case, you may need to go up or down a firmness level based on your weight.Petite SleepersTypically, petite sleepers, or those who fall under 130 pounds, need to go down a firmness level. This is because your body weight may not compress your mattress enough when you lie down if you are too light. This can translate into the mattress feeling firmer than it is and exerting more pressure on your body than it should.Mattresses for lightweight sleepers need to be quick to hug the body. As an example, an average-weight back sleeper might need a medium-firm mattress, while a petite back sleeper would need a medium one to get the same amount of compression and contouring.Plus-Size SleepersThose who weigh over 230 pounds are considered plus-size sleepers. Plus-size sleepers tend to have the opposite problem as petite sleepers because their body weight can overcompress a mattress with a firmness that corresponds to their sleep position. This can lead to sinkage, which allows the spine to fall out of alignment. To counter this issue, most plus-size sleepers should go one firmness level up from the one that is considered their sleep position’s baseline firmness when browsing mattresses for heavy sleepers. For example, a plus-size combo sleeper might want to consider going up from a medium to a medium-firm mattress.Mattress SizesMattress SizeDimensionsTwin38″ x 75″Twin XL38″ x 80″Full54″ x 75″Queen60″ x 80″King76″ x 80″California King72″ x 84″Learn more about better sleepSign up for sleep health education, expert tips, and the latest and greatest mattress sales. But no pile of pillows compares to the ease and comfort of sitting up in bed using an adjustable base. Adjustable bed bases move the entire mattress underneath your body to place you in whatever position you choose. This can be especially helpful for those who are sitting up in bed because of long-term bed confinement. If you’re on bed rest, you may not even be able to maneuver yourself well enough to pile pillows behind your back or under your legs. However, you enjoy a mattress for bed sores as you sleep, then sit yourself up and let yourself down at the touch of a button with most adjustable bases during the day.Another great thing about adjustable bases is they help improve your comfort and sleep when you’re lying down. With an adjustable base, you can sleep partially or fully elevated. This has many benefits that can help improve your sleep and your health, including improved circulation, reduced inflammation, and pain relief. There are adjustable beds for back pain and other issues for increased comfort. You also don’t need to worry about adjustable bases costing an arm and a leg. While adjustable beds were more like ultra-expensive hospital beds 10 and 20 years ago. Nowadays, adjustable beds are much more affordable and sometimes not even that much more expensive than a standard mattress foundation. This allows many shoppers to reap the benefits of an adjustable bed.Other Bed Accessories for Sitting Up ComfortablyReading PillowsDesigned specifically for providing support while sitting or reclining, a reading pillow offers several benefits that contribute to a more comfortable experience.A reading pillow provides excellent back support. It typically features a high backrest that aligns with the natural curvature of the spine, helping to maintain proper posture while sitting up. This added support reduces strain on the back muscles and promotes overall spinal alignment, preventing discomfort and minimizing the risk of developing back pain. Moreover, reading pillows often include armrests or side supports. These features offer additional support and help alleviate strain on the arms and shoulders, making it easier to hold a book, tablet, or other items while sitting up. The armrests also provide a comfortable place to rest the arms, enhancing overall relaxation. The plush and cushioned construction of a reading pillow adds a layer of comfort and coziness. It allows you to lean back and sink into the pillow, providing a soft and supportive surface to rest against. This can make extended periods of sitting up in bed more enjoyable and comfortable, whether you’re reading, watching TV, or working on a laptop.Mattress ToppersYou don’t just have to use a mattress topper for sleeping. Having a mattress topper can actually make sitting up in bed more comfortable. What it does is add an extra layer of foam on top of your mattress, changing how it feels. If you want to sit up in bed, adding a firm topper can be helpful. It gives you more support and stability. With a firm topper, you won’t sink too much or feel uncomfortable while sitting. It helps keep your spine in a good position. The great thing about mattress toppers is that you can easily take them off at night when you want to sleep. So, you can enjoy the benefits of the topper while sitting up and then have the original feel of your mattress when it’s time to sleep.Another option is to choose a firmer mattress that feels good to sit on, and then add a soft mattress topper for extra coziness when you sleep. However, it’s important to remember that a mattress is primarily designed for sleeping. So, it’s better to choose a mattress that suits your sleeping needs first and then use a topper if you need it for sitting up.Seat CushionsIf you want to make sitting up in bed even more comfortable, you can also consider using a seat cushion. It may sound a bit strange to use a seat cushion in bed, but it can actually provide extra padding and support. This can help reduce pressure points and make sitting for long periods more comfortable.Using a seat cushion can also help prevent back pain. When you sit for a long time, especially on hard or uncomfortable surfaces, it can put pressure on your spine and cause discomfort or pain in your lower back. But a seat cushion designed for back pain can improve your posture and reduce pressure points by providing supportive cushioning. For anyone who spends a lot of time sitting up in bed, a foam seat cushion is a good option. Foam seat cushions are supportive because they conform to the shape of your body. They provide consistent support and distribute your weight more evenly, making sitting up in bed a more comfortable experience.Daybed MattressesIf you’re choosing a mattress for a daybed, you may have to rethink your priorities because you’ll probably be sitting up most of the time and only sleeping on it on occasion. This means you’ll want to focus more on comfort for sitting rather than comfort for sleeping.Since this is the case, focus on mattresses that feel more like couch cushions in the sense that they have lots of lift and support. Hybrid and latex mattresses are better because they offer tons of responsiveness and buoyancy. You’ll also want to zero in on mattresses that have superior edge support, as you’ll be sitting on the edge of the mattress frequently.SEE ALSO: Daybed Mattresses vs. Twin MattressesSaving on New MattressesBest MLK Day Mattress SalesBest Presidents Day Mattress SalesBest Sleep Awareness Week Mattress SalesBest Memorial Day Mattress SalesBest 4th of July Mattress SalesBest Labor Day Mattress SalesBest Columbus Day Mattress SalesBest Black Friday Mattress SalesBest Cyber Monday Mattress SalesFAQsWhat is the best mattress for sitting up in a daybed?Since a daybed is usually intended to serve primarily as a seating area and secondarily as a guest sleeping area, it might be best to select a mattress that is better for sitting. This means you’ll want a firmer mattress with lots of support and less compression. A medium-firm or even a firm mattress might be best for a daybed. The best mattress materials for a daybed might be latex or hybrid construction. Both of these mattress types will offer lots of buoyancy and support, as well as enough bounce to ensure that you won’t be waiting for body impressions to clear out if you shift around on your daybed. Can an adjustable bed make sitting up in bed easier? An adjustable bed can absolutely make sitting up in bed easier. In fact, for some people, it may make sitting up in bed possible in the first place. Many people on bed rest or who are otherwise incapacitated are not able to pile up pillows and make the adjustments necessary to sit up on a standard bed. However, nowadays, adjustable beds can be altered at the touch of a button. All you have to do is grab the wireless remote and select from one of the bed’s programmed presets or one of your own. This can make sitting up in bed a much more pleasant experience. How can I stay comfortable sitting up in bed for long periods? There are lots of ways you can stay comfortable sitting up in bed for long periods. One of the best ways to stay comfortable when sitting up in bed is to get an adjustable base. Adjustable bases force the mattress to flex beneath your body, and this creates a much more comfortable surface for you to sit on.Strategically placing pillows can also help make you more comfortable sitting up in bed. For instance, a wedge pillow behind your back or a roll pillow under your knees may help you feel more comfortable. Is there an ideal mattress firmness for sitting up in bed?Technically, firmer mattresses will offer you more support when you are sitting up and more of your body weight is distributed over less surface area. However, you shouldn’t buy a mattress just to sit up in bed. The primary purpose of a mattress is for sleeping. This means there isn’t really an ideal mattress firmness for sitting up in bed.Rather, there’s an ideal firmness for your sleep position. Side sleepers need softer mattresses. Stomach sleepers need firmer mattresses. And back and combo sleepers need mattresses that fall somewhere in the middle. You should focus more on your sleep style than sitting up in bed when selecting your mattress firmness. What is the best mattress material for sitting up in bed? There are a couple of mattress types that could be perfect for sitting up in bed. One of the best mattress types for sitting up in bed is a latex mattress. Latex is very buoyant and responsive, so it will feel more like sitting on a sofa than sitting on a mattress when you are in a seated position. But it still feels amazing lying down.Another fantastic mattress for sitting up in bed is a hybrid mattress. Hybrid mattresses are also very responsive and very supportive, which can translate into hours of comfortable sitting as well as long nights of comfortable sleep. How can I keep sheets from sliding off a mattress I sit on?To prevent sheets from slipping off when you sit on your mattress, try using elastic sheet bands that wrap underneath the mattress corners to hold everything in place.Purchasing fitted sheets with elastic all the way around (rather than just at the corners) provides much better grip and significantly reduces sliding issues.Additionally, specialty sheet grippers that attach to the underside of your mattress can create tension that keeps sheets firmly secured, even when you’re frequently sitting on the edge of the bed.Bottom LineSometimes the best mattress for lying down in bed and the best mattress for sitting up in bed might not be the same mattress. You might like to sleep on memory foam and sit on latex foam. You might need a soft mattress for sleeping and a medium-firm mattress for sitting up.If your sleep style conflicts with sitting up in bed, you may have to find a compromise in firmness or material, or you may need to make yourself more comfortable using pillows and cushions. You could even use a soft mattress topper for sleeping and remove it during the day for sitting. But if you stick to the mattress list above, you are much more likely to find the best mattress for both daytime sitting and nighttime lying down.Dr. Burns tests each mattress at eachnight’s facility to make sure the recommendations are based on real, expert reviews.About the author Dr. Jordan Burns, DC, MS CERTIFIED SLEEP COACH Dr. Jordan Burns is a chiropractor and owner of ProWellness Chiropractic in Fishers, Indiana. He is an Indiana University-Bloomington graduate, where he received his first Bachelor’s of Science degree in Kinesiology while being a member of the men’s track and field team.Dr. Burns then attended Logan University-College of Chiropractic where he graduated with three degrees: a Bachelor’s in Life Sciences, a Master’s in Sports Science and Rehabilitation and a Doctorate of ChiropracticWhile at Logan, Dr. Burns was accepted as a Senior Intern in the Biofreeze Human Performance Center, a clinic that specializes in sport-specific injuries and rehabilitation.Board-certified by the National and Indiana Boards of Chiropractic, Dr. Burns has enjoyed successfully helping patients in his clinic relieve pain, improve mobility and become overall healthier versions of themselves.
