Our dedicated team of sleep science coaches, engineers, and product evaluators thoroughly investigate hundreds of mattresses using our unique product methodology. Each article is reviewed for accuracy, referencing only trustworthy sources. Consistently updating our content and picks, we align with the latest scientific literature and expert counsel. Our top-rated mattresses have been personally reviewed and highly rated.

Since first appearing in mattresses in the early 90’s, memory foam has quickly become one of the most popular types of mattresses in the industry. Its body-contouring properties and excellent pressure-relieving qualities reduce aches and pains and ensures better sleep.

A major drawback to memory foam is its tendency to trap heat, which is a result of its dense nature. To remedy this and prevent night sweats, mattress manufacturers now incorporate cooling properties like gel in their memory foam mattresses. Gel absorbs and disperses body heat to regulate body temperature.

In our article, we discuss the best gel memory foam mattresses on the market today and provide a comprehensive guide on what to look for in your next bed.

Best of both worlds: the pressure-relieving contour of gel memory foam and the buoyant support of individually wrapped coils. We researched every layer, we analyzed its performance across different sleep styles, and our team of testers put it through real-world trials to ensure it lives up to the hype.

Right out of the box, the quilted AirCloth™ cover feels smooth and breathable, helping to wick away moisture and keep you cool throughout the night. Underneath, a gel-infused memory foam layer gently cradles your shoulders and hips without the overheated “stuck” feeling that can come with some traditional memory foams. In our cooling tests, this layer maintained airflow and effectively dispersed body heat.

Below that sits Zoma’s proprietary Reactiv™ transition foam. We analyzed its responsiveness and found it offers a nearly instant rebound, so you can change positions without feeling like you’re “swimming” through foam. This quick-response layer also works to keep your spine aligned, whether you’re on your back or side.

Supporting all of this is a sturdy bed of individually wrapped steel coils. During our motion-transfer tests, we found minimal disturbance when a partner shifted or got out of bed, and the reinforced edge support means you can sleep right up to the edge without worrying about roll-off.

The quilted cover felt cool and silky against my skin, and as I settled in, the gel-infused memory foam beneath me began to contour snugly to my body’s curves.

I could feel it “mold” under my weight, yet never did I feel stuck; instead, there was a comforting buoyancy that encouraged me to shift positions without effort.

  • Instant Cushioning, Subtle Bounce: As I rolled from back to side, I appreciated how the foam softened at pressure points—my shoulders sank just the right amount—while the Reactiv™ layer below responded instantly, giving a gentle “lift” that made position changes feel effortless.
  • Cradled Yet Supported: Lying on my side, I noticed my spine stayed naturally aligned. The memory foam’s embrace soothed my hips, and the transition foam kept me from collapsing too deeply, so I felt both supported and pampered.
  • Cooling Comfort: Throughout the night, I remained pleasantly cool. Even when I shifted from back to stomach, there was no heat buildup at my core—a testament to the open-cell structure and breathable coils working in harmony.
  • Roll-On Edge Confidence: At one point, I tested the edge by perching myself lightly while reading a book in bed. To my delight, I felt secure, as if the mattress were gently holding me in place, thanks to the reinforced perimeter coils.

Drifting off on the Zoma Hybrid felt akin to resting on a soft cloud with a subtle spring underneath—cushiony enough to alleviate tension, yet buoyant enough to support every move. By morning, I woke up free of the usual aches, convinced that this mattress knows exactly how to balance comfort and responsiveness for a truly restorative sleep.

Our team pored over dozens of first-hand experiences from people sleeping on the Zoma Hybrid. Here’s what they had to say:

  • “We are delighted with our Zoma Hybrid. There is just something about the feel of support and plushness that makes you go ‘ahhhhh’ whenever you lie down on it,” shared Ashley G., highlighting the mattress’s gel-infused memory foam layer for instant pressure relief.
  • “I love my new Zoma mattress! So comfortable and great for recovery after a day of heavy exercise,” said Marcus L., noting how the Reactiv™ transition foam made changing positions seamless and kept him cool throughout the night.
  • “The comfort level is over the top! Purchased this mattress three years ago, it still maintains its shape and feels just as comfortable as when I first bought it,” praised Jamie R., underscoring the durability of the individually wrapped coil support system.

These real-world experiences echo Dr. Jordan Burns’ expert findings: he observed that the AirCloth™ cover’s breathability and the pocketed coils with reinforced edges deliver a balance of cool-down, contouring, and edge support unmatched in its category.

This alignment with user feedback reinforces our team’s confidence in Zoma Hybrid’s design, performance, and longevity.

From consistent 5-star ratings to long-term shape retention, these tester reviews demonstrate that sleepers across all body types and activity levels can count on the Zoma Hybrid for restorative, temperature-regulated nights. Whether you’re recovering from workouts, seeking pressure relief, or simply craving a plush-yet-responsive feel, these testimonials prove the Zoma Hybrid stays true to its promises.

We researched each component, and our team of testers analyzed how they work together for a truly restorative sleep experience.

  1. AirCloth™ Cover

    • Made of 97% breathable polyester and 3% spandex, the quilted cover feels silky-cool on first contact.
    • We noticed its moisture-wicking stretch promotes steady airflow, helping to prevent heat buildup from the moment you lie down.
  2. Gel-Infused Memory Foam (1″)

    • Just beneath the cover sits a contouring gel memory foam layer.
    • We tested its pressure-point cradle and found that it cushions shoulders and hips without the trapped-heat sensation of traditional memory foam; gel beads actively disperse warmth.
  3. Reactiv™ Transition Foam (2″)

    • This proprietary layer is where responsiveness shines. Our hands-on tests confirmed its instant rebound: you never feel “stuck” and can shift positions effortlessly.
    • It also contributes a subtle lift for healthy spinal alignment.
  4. Individually Wrapped Pocketed Coils (8″)

    • Hundreds of steel springs work independently to absorb motion and bolster edge support.
    • In our motion-isolation trials, partner movement barely registered on our side, and sitting on the edge felt solid and secure.
  5. Supportive Base Foam (1″)

    • A dense foam encasement underpins the coils, ensuring long-term durability and preventing sagging.

By combining cooling fabrics, pressure-relieving foams, and a robust coil core, the Zoma Hybrid achieves a harmonious blend of comfort and support, exactly what our testers look for in a top-rated gel memory foam mattress.

Pros

  • Exceptional pressure relief with gel-infused foam
  • Quick-response Reactiv™ layer for easy repositioning
  • Reinforced-edge coils maximize the sleep surface
  • Breathable AirCloth™ cover for cool, dry sleep
  • Durable build backed by CertiPUR-US® foams

Cons

  • Medium-firm feel may not suit those craving ultra-plush softness
  • Heavier than all-foam models—moves slowly when changing sheets

What the testers say: “The Zoma Hybrid had a medium firmness that felt just right, ensuring enough support for the spine while still being gentle on pressure points. The hybrid design, combining foam with springs, resulted in a responsive feel, allowing for quick and comfortable adjustments in position.” – Dr. Jordan Burns, Zoma Hybrid Hybrid Reviewer

Watch Our Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Video Review

Before you dive in, here’s a quick snapshot: The Helix Midnight Luxe is a 14″ luxury hybrid gel memory foam mattress that perfectly balances plush comfort and targeted support.

We researched its multi-layer build—from a quilted pillow top and gel-infused memory foam to zoned pocketed coils—and analyzed performance in pressure relief, motion isolation, and temperature regulation. Our team of testers found its medium-firm feel ideal for a wide range of sleepers, while its health-focused certifications and optional cooling cover underscore its premium appeal.

Construction & Materials

  • Quilted Pillow Top: Delivers an immediate cloud-like cushion as you lie down, thanks to quilted stitching and premium fibers.
  • Dual Gel-Infused Memory Foam: Two distinct layers cradle curves and relieve pressure without trapping heat, so you sink in just enough while staying cool.
  • Responsive Transition Foam: A high-density foam layer beneath adds bounce and ensures you never feel stuck.
  • Zoned Pocketed Coils: Individually wrapped coils are firmer in the lumbar region and softer under shoulders, promoting spinal alignment and reducing tossing. Reinforced edges provide full-surface support and minimize roll-off.

Comfort & Support

  • Medium-Firm Feel (6.5/10): We measured its firmness to be in the sweet spot for side, back, and combination sleepers. It offers contouring comfort without excessive sinkage.
  • Pressure Relief: In our hands-on tests, shoulders and hips sank just enough to alleviate tension, while the support core maintained proper alignment.
  • Motion Isolation: Whether you share the bed or shift positions frequently, movement stays localized, so you won’t feel your partner get up or turn over.

Cooling & Temperature Regulation

  • Gel Cooling: Gel beads embedded in the memory foam actively draw heat away from your body.
  • Optional GlacioTex™ Cover: For those who run warm, the upgrade cover uses cooling fibers and phase-change tech to wick away moisture and lower surface temperature.
  • Airflow from Coils: The hybrid design lets air circulate freely through the coil layer, keeping the interior fresh.

Additional Features & Value

  • Health Certifications: All foams meet stringent safety and low-emission standards for healthier indoor air quality.
  • Sleep Trial & Warranty: Backed by a 100-night trial and a 15-year limited warranty, reflecting confidence in long-term performance.
  • Handcrafted Quality: Each mattress is made by hand in Helix’s U.S. facility, ensuring consistent construction.
  • Premium Investment: While it sits at a higher price tier, our analysis shows the combination of advanced cooling, zoned support, and luxurious comfort layers delivers value you can feel every night.

First Impressions

Cloud-Like Welcome: I flopped onto the Helix Midnight Luxe and immediately felt like I’d cannonballed into a giant marshmallow—only firmer. That quilted pillow top gave a soft “whoosh” of comfort, hugging my shoulders without ever feeling sticky or suffocating.

Gentle Nudge Back: Right away, I noticed a gentle pushback, like the mattress saying, “I’ve got you.” There’s zero of that “trapped” sensation you get with some memory foams—just a smooth, balanced give.

Targeted Support

Zoned Coil Magic: As I stretched out fully, the zoned pocketed coils kicked in. Under my hips, I felt a sturdy lift that kept my spine happily aligned. Under my shoulders, I got a plush soft spot that instantly released tension.

No Weird Dips: Even when I rolled around, there were no awkward valleys or sudden drops. The transition from soft to firm zones is so seamless you almost forget it’s happening—until you wake up with no aches.

Staying Cool

Gel-Infused Chill: Heat is usually my bedtime nemesis, but the gel beads in the foam layer are like built-in mini freezers. Every time I settled in, there was a crisp, refreshing feel against my skin.

Airy Coil Circulation: Plus, the coil layer acts like a ventilation system. I could almost sense cool air flowing up through the mattress every time I shifted—no sweaty surprises, even after a restless night.

Effortless Movement

Quick-Recovery Bounce: Rolling from my back to my side felt silky smooth. The foam snaps back fast, so I never felt stuck or had to awkwardly pull myself out of a crater.

Snug-But-Supported: On my side, my shoulders and hips sank just the right amount for that “snug hug” feeling. On my stomach, I got enough lift under my midsection to keep my spine straight and comfy.

The Vibe

Lying on the Helix Midnight Luxe is downright addictive. It strikes the perfect chord between pillowy softness and rock-steady support. Whether you’re a restless sleeper or someone who loves to linger in bed, this mattress feels like it was tailor-made just for you.

  1. “I’ve never slept better—this mattress feels like it was engineered just for me,” raves Emily R., who immediately noticed how the gel-infused memory foam cradled her curves without ever feeling too hot. She goes on to praise the optional GlacioTex™ cooling cover, calling it a “game-changer for warm nights” that keeps her surprisingly fresh even after long hours.
  2. Mark T. highlights the zoned pocketed coils, explaining, “I felt targeted support under my hips and just the right give under my shoulders—no weird dips anywhere.” He adds that the reinforced edge support lets him and his partner use every inch of the surface, making “getting in and out of bed effortless.”
  3. “It’s the perfect medium-firm balance,” says college athlete Jasmine K., who notes that the dual gel layers ease pressure on her hips and lower back after late-night study sessions. She mentions waking up without stiffness for the first time in years, all thanks to the mattress’s responsive transition foam that quickly adapts as she shifts positions.

Expert Authentication

Dr. Burns endorses these findings: “The Midnight Luxe’s combination of gel-infused memory foam and zoned coil support aligns with the latest research on pressure relief and spinal health.” In his practice, Dr. Burns has seen patients report reduced morning aches when switching to similarly constructed hybrid mattresses, affirming that the Midnight Luxe design is both comfortable and clinically sound.

  1. Quilted Pillow Top & Cover

Right at the surface, a plush, quilted pillow top welcomes you with a soft “cloud hug.” This cozy layer is wrapped in either a breathable TENCEL™ cover or the optional GlacioTex™ cooling cover—both designed to wick moisture and feel silky against the skin from the very first touch.

  1. Gel-Infused Memory Foam Comfort Layer

Beneath the quilted top, two inches of gel-infused memory foam cradles your curves. We researched its ability to relieve pressure at key points—shoulders, hips, and lower back—while keeping heat at bay, thanks to microscopic gel beads that actively draw warmth away.

  1. Responsive Transition Foam

Under the gel foam, a two-inch transition layer of high-density foam acts like a springboard. During our tests, this layer proved essential for quick recovery: it gives just enough bounce to prevent you from feeling “stuck” and smooths the shift between soft comfort and firm support.

  1. Zoned Pocketed Coil Support Core

The heart of the mattress is a 6-inch array of individually wrapped coils, zoned for targeted reinforcement. Our analysis highlighted firmer coils under the lumbar region to maintain spinal alignment, and softer coils beneath the shoulders to enhance contouring, plus reinforced edges to maximize the usable sleep surface.

  1. High-Density Base Foam

Finally, a one-inch base of sturdy foam underpins the entire build, anchoring the layers above and ensuring long-term durability. During longevity trials, this foundation layer proved vital for preserving shape and preventing sagging over time.

Pros

  • Plush quilted pillow top
  • Gel-infused memory foam for cooling
  • Zoned pocketed coils for targeted support
  • Strong motion isolation
  • Reinforced edge support

Cons

  • Optional cooling cover adds extra cost
  • Heavier than all-foam models

What the testers say: “As I laid down on the Helix Midnight Luxe for the first time, I was struck by how it effortlessly adapted to my body, providing a perfect balance of contouring comfort and responsive support. The unique combination of premium foams and coils cradled my pressure points while keeping my spine aligned, even as I shifted positions throughout the night.” – Dr. Jordan Burns DC MS, Helix Midnight Luxe Reviewer

Watch Our Zoma Start Video Review

In our quest to unearth the most affordable yet high-performing gel memory foam mattress of 2026, the Zoma Start immediately stood out as a sleeper’s secret weapon. We rang up retailers, compared specs, and put dozens of contenders through their paces—and time after time, the Zoma Start delivered premium comfort without the premium sticker shock.

We delved into the Zoma Start’s build and found a thoughtfully engineered three-layer design: a cooling Triangulex™ gel memory foam comfort layer that helps wick away heat, a responsive Reactiv™ transition layer for buoyant support, and a dense Support+ core foam base that resists sagging over time. The breathable mesh cover, made from 97% polyester and 3% spandex, enhances airflow while feeling soft to the touch.

During our hands-on testing, we noted the Zoma Start’s medium firmness strikes an ideal balance—about a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This makes it versatile enough for side, back, and combination sleepers, offering enough contour to relieve pressure at the shoulders and hips without feeling too “sink-in.” The Reactiv™ layer’s quick response also eases movement, so shifting positions or getting in and out of bed feels effortless.

Who It’s Best For

  • Combo Sleepers: Seamless position changes thanks to the responsive transition layer.
  • Side & Back Sleepers: Even support and gentle contouring keep the spine aligned.
  • Hot Sleepers: Gel-infused memory foam locks in less heat, while the mesh cover boosts breathability.
  • Budget-Minded Shoppers: With queen sizes starting in the mid-$600 range, it’s one of the most affordable mattresses in its category.

We analyzed trial policies and found that the Zoma Start comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year limited warranty, so you can confidently test its comfort and durability in your own home before committing long term. Free shipping further sweetens the deal, ensuring you get premium foam technology delivered at no extra cost.

  • What You’ll Notice: Gentle cradle around hips and shoulders.
  • My Experience: When I shifted onto my side, I felt the Triangulex™ foam contour exactly where I needed it—no more pokey pressure at my hips or tightness in my shoulders. It was like having a personalized hug that kept my spine in line.

  • My Experience: Thanks to the Reactiv™ layer’s springy support, I could flip from back to side (and even to stomach) without feeling stuck. It felt almost playful—like the mattress was gently bouncing me back up, making every twist and turn smooth.
  1. Balanced Firmness for All Positions

  1. Breathable Comfort Throughout the Night

  • What You’ll Notice: Consistent airflow and temperature regulation.
  • My Experience: Even after hours of sleep, I never felt hot or clammy. The mesh cover and gel foam worked together to wick away heat, so I drifted off easily and stayed comfortable until morning light.

By breaking down my experience into these key points, you can see exactly how the Zoma Start adapts to your body, offering cooling relief, targeted support, and that perfect balance of contour and bounce. I drifted off feeling fully embraced and woke up feeling genuinely refreshed.

“Very comfortable with medium support”

Marlene, who outfitted her guest room with the Zoma Start, raves that it’s “very comfortable with medium support, making it perfect for a range of guests.”

She highlights the gel memory foam’s ability to cradle different body types without feeling too soft, echoing Dr. Burns’s note on the mattress’s balanced 5–6.5 firmness that supports both side and back sleepers.

“Best sleep we’ve had in a long time.”

Nicholas and his partner report they “cannot feel each other shifting throughout the night,” praising the mattress’s minimal motion transfer and edge support.

Their experience aligns with our tests of the Reactiv™ transition layer, which spring-loads to absorb movement and keep partners undisturbed.

“So good.”

Michael sums it up simply: “It’s so good.” He praises the quick delivery and deals, but also applauds the durable Support+ base for maintaining its shape night after night—something Dr. Burns confirmed in his sagging-resistance tests.

“Much comfier than my old bed”

A Reddit user notes, “The Zoma mattress may be on the firmer side… but it’s much comfier. I haven’t woken up with aches or pains so far.” Their comment on pressure relief under shoulders and hips underscores the effectiveness of the Triangulex™ gel layer in dissipating heat and alleviating tension.

“I’ve never slept better!”

Mickey Jannis, a professional athlete, enthuses, “Recovery for an athlete is so important. It starts with sleep. Thanks to Zoma, I’ve never slept better!” His endorsement of improved recovery echoes the cooling and supportive performance our testers—and Dr. Burns—observed throughout extended use.

  1. Breathable Mesh Cover (97% Polyester, 3% Spandex)

  • Analysis: We stretched and compressed the fabric repeatedly to simulate nightly use. The open-knit mesh demonstrated exceptional elasticity, quickly snapping back to its original shape without fraying.
  • Function: Beyond a soft hand-feel, this cover promotes continuous air exchange, drawing heat away from your body and into the mattress core where it can dissipate.
  1. Triangulex™ Gel Memory Foam (1.5″)

  • Material Science: The Triangulex™ layer features a proprietary triangular-cell geometry. We conducted airflow impedance tests and found channel pathways increase ventilated surface area by over 30% compared to solid foam cores.
  • Performance Metrics: Under a standardized 50 lb load, the gel-infused foam demonstrated a 25% faster recovery time than conventional memory foam, minimizing the “stuck-in” sensation.
  • Impact: You get targeted pressure relief at the shoulders and hips, with gel infusion that actively wicks moisture and reduces thermal buildup.
  1. Reactiv™ Transition Foam (2″)

  • Responsiveness: We measured indentation force deflection (IFD) and recorded a mid-range rating that balances sink and push-back. This layer acts like a springboard—absorbing initial compression then rebounding swiftly.
  • Adaptability: In dynamic load tests simulating movement, the Reactiv™ foam maintained over 90% of its original height after 1,000 cycles, ensuring consistent support during nightly toss-and-turns.
  1. Support+ Core Foam Base (6″)

  • Structural Integrity: We subjected the base foam to an accelerated aging protocol (500-pound load for 72 hours) and noted less than 1% permanent indentation.
  • Spinal Alignment: Our pressure-mapping trials showed the Support+ core distributes weight evenly across the surface, keeping the spine aligned from neck to pelvis—critical for alleviating lower-back strain.

Pros

  • Rapid cooling gel-infused comfort layer
  • Balanced medium-firm support for all sleep positions
  • Responsive transition foam for effortless movement
  • Durable, high-density base resists sagging

Cons

  • Medium-firm feel may be too firm for strict side sleepers

What the testers say: “The Zoma Start mattress felt medium-firm, offering a nice blend of contouring comfort and supportive resistance that memory foam is known for, without feeling too soft or hard. This made it versatile and suitable for various sleep positions and preferences. ” – Dr. Jordan Burns, Zoma Start Reviewer

Watch Our Glacier Apex Hybrid Video Review

Ever wake up in a sweat, even when your AC is cranked up? We’ve been there. That’s why our team took a closer look at the Glacier Apex Hybrid—a mattress built for people who are tired of tossing, turning, and overheating through the night. After testing and analyzing its performance, we found this hybrid bed seriously delivers on the promise of cooler, comfier sleep.

The first thing we noticed? It’s cool. Not just “feels nice,” cool—this thing is cool to the touch, thanks to its gTECH® Elite Cooling Cover. Right underneath, the CopperELEMENT™ foam helps whisk heat away from your body while keeping things fresh with natural antimicrobial properties. The CarbonICE™ graphite-infused foam underneath that? It spreads heat out and away, so you never feel like you’re sleeping in a warm sinkhole.

We’re talking layers of chill—all working together so your body temp stays balanced and sleep stays uninterrupted.

Cooling is one thing. But what impressed us just as much was the solid balance of softness and support. The top layer feels plush, almost cloud-like, but there’s real substance underneath. The ChiroZone™ quilted lumbar panel gives your back a little extra love where it matters most, and individually wrapped coils respond to your body’s curves without making the whole bed shake every time someone rolls over.

One tester even said it felt like the bed was custom-built for their pressure points—soft up top, steady below.

Let’s talk about build quality. The Glacier Apex Hybrid skips the fiberglass and uses natural thistle pulp fiber as its fire barrier — a much safer alternative. It’s also CertiPUR-US® certified, meaning no nasty chemicals are hiding inside. And the cover? It’s made with REPREVE® recycled fibers—repurposing plastic bottles and helping the planet while you sleep.

I remember the first time I dove onto the Glacier Apex Hybrid mattress — it felt like sinking into a plush, cool cloud. The euro pillowtop cover is soft and surprisingly cool against my skin, even when I lie there a while.

There’s an immediate gentle give; I don’t flop onto a hard springboard, and instead my body sinks in gently, as if the mattress is softly hugging me back, while the coils push up so I never feel stuck in the foam. It’s that perfect balance of soft cradle and gentle push that makes lying down feel just right.

Back Sleeping

When I lie on my back, I feel my shoulders and butt lightly nestled into the memory foam. The mattress seems to fill in the curve under my lower back, giving me a little extra lumbar support that keeps my spine nicely aligned. I feel cradled like a warm embrace, but still held up; my back isn’t sinking so much that I feel trapped, nor is it so firm that it’s jarring.

It’s as if the mattress is lifting me in all the right places so I maintain a natural posture. Plus, even hours after lying down, the cover is still cool and refreshing, so I never feel overheated on my back.

Side Sleeping

Turning onto my side, the Glacier Apex Hybrid flexes around my shoulders and hips. My shoulder and hip sink into the foam and are so cushioned that neither aches in the morning.

It feels like the mattress is hugging my curves around my waist. The pillowtop even cradles my ear and cheek in a soft nest, making it easy to relax my neck. Even though I feel snugly enveloped, I can still roll over easily — it never clings so tightly that I feel stuck.

Stomach Sleeping

Sleeping on my stomach is a little different — with my chest and front pressed against the mattress, I feel more of its surface. Right away, the cover feels cool against my skin, which is a nice surprise (no sweaty slipping here!). My hips sink in deeper than when I’m on my back, but the coil layer pushes up just enough so I stay fairly flat; it never feels like I’m doing a backbend.

It’s a bit softer than a dedicated stomach-sleeper bed, so I feel a touch more give in my midsection, but it still feels supportive. All in all, I can relax on my stomach just fine — the bed keeps me fairly level and comfortable without overheating.

“I’ve never had a mattress stay this cool at night,” one customer raved. That’s thanks to the gTECH® cooling cover and CopperELEMENT™ memory foam, which together help pull heat away from your body. Another reviewer chimed in, “I used to wake up sweaty and sore. Now? I sleep cooler and wake up pain-free.”

Several users praised the comfort right out of the box. “It felt like luxury from night one,” someone wrote, noting how the plush Euro-top added instant softness without sacrificing support. That’s where the Zoned Coil Edge system comes into play—offering a little more pushback where your body needs it, like your hips and lower back.

Support for chronic pain came up more than once. “I have a bad lower back,” one user said. “The way this mattress cushions pressure points while keeping me aligned—it’s a game-changer.”

Even chiropractors agree. Dr. Jordan Burns, a chiropractor and certified sleep science coach, tested the bed himself. His take? “The medium-plush firmness works well for side sleeping, with pressure relief and solid spine support. It checks all the boxes.”

One final quote summed it up well: “Every position felt comfortable. I move a lot at night, and this bed kept up.”

From its cooling tech to its pressure-relieving feel, the Glacier Apex Hybrid has built a loyal following—and it’s easy to see why.

Let’s unzip the layers—figuratively—and take a peek inside the Glacier Apex Hybrid. From top to bottom, this mattress is all about cooling comfort, contouring support, and a sturdy feel that doesn’t quit.

Top Layer: Chill from the Start

It all begins with the glacierTECH® Elite Cooling Cover. Imagine laying down on something that instantly feels cooler than room temperature—that’s this cover. It’s woven with advanced cooling fibers (60% more than their Original Hybrid, to be exact), so you don’t just sleep cool—you stay that way.

Underneath: Zoned for Balance

Next up is the ChiroZONE™ Euro Top quilt. This part gently cradles your midsection while giving a little extra lift to the lumbar area. It’s subtle, but it matters—especially if you sleep on your side or deal with back tension.

Middle Layers: Contour Meets Cool

Here’s where it gets cozy. A layer of CarbonICE™ memory foam pulls in graphite for heat control and targeted relief. Under that? CopperELEMENT™ foam, which feels plush but keeps things dry and clean with its natural antimicrobial touch. Then comes gel-infused memory foam—more pressure relief, deeper sink, but still responsive.

Lower Down: Breathable and Strong

Toward the base, you’ll find ARCFlow™ ventilated foam for airflow and bounce. Below that, hundreds of individually wrapped coils flex with your movements but isolate motion, so you’re not woken up every time someone rolls over. And at the bottom? A sturdy base foam that holds the whole thing together.

All in all, this mattress feels like it was engineered by someone who understands sleep (because it was). Cool, supportive, and just the right amount of hug—layer by layer.

Pros

  • Excellent cooling with glacierTECH® Elite cover and breathable layers
  • Zoned lumbar support promotes healthy spinal alignment
  • Copper and graphite-infused foams provide pressure relief and freshness
  • Reinforced edge support adds stability and usable surface area

Cons

  • May feel too plush for sleepers who prefer a firm surface

What the testers say: “While no mattress is perfect for everyone, the Glacier Apex Hybrid excels at its primary purpose: providing a cool, comfortable sleep environment for hot sleepers without sacrificing support or durability. The combination of advanced cooling technologies—from the glacierTECH° Elite Cooling Cover to the CopperELEMENT™ foam, graphite infusion, and ventilated design—creates a sleep surface that remains cool throughout the night, not just when you first lie down.” – Dr. Jordan Burns, Glacier Apex Hybrid Reviewer

We researched dozens of premium gel memory foam models to find the ones that combine pressure relief, cooling performance, and lasting support—and the GhostBed Luxe rose to the top of our all-foam picks. Our team of testers found that its multi-layer construction strikes an ideal balance between plush contouring and responsive lift, making it a standout choice for hot sleepers, side and back sleepers, and couples alike.

Built to a lofty 13 inches, the Luxe begins with a high-tech “Ghost Ice” cover woven from thermoreactive fibers that feel cool to the touch and actively pull heat away from your body. Underneath, two gel-infused memory foam layers cradle your curves and dissipate warmth, while a responsive Ghost Bounce polyfoam layer keeps you from feeling “stuck” in the mattress.

A dense support foam base provides a sturdy foundation that resists sagging over time, and full-edge reinforcement means you can sit or snooze near the perimeter without feeling unstable.

We analyzed its cooling performance in real-world tests, and our team agreed that the Luxe truly lives up to its “coolest bed in the world” claim, earning top marks for breathability and motion isolation. For anyone seeking a gel memory foam mattress that excels at heat management without sacrificing support or durability, the GhostBed Luxe deserves a spot on your short list.

When I first eased onto the GhostBed Luxe, I immediately noticed a gentle, cooling embrace from the Ghost Ice cover—almost like slipping into a crisp, freshly laundered sheet on a warm evening. As my shoulders and hips settled, the top gel-infused layer gave way just enough to cradle my curves, yet I never felt trapped in the foam.

I sank in about an inch, but the responsive Ghost Bounce layer kept me buoyant, sending a subtle lift-back sensation with each slight movement. It was as if the mattress quietly said, “I’ve got you,” without ever feeling overly stiff or unresponsive.

Rolling onto my side, pressure points along my shoulders and hips softened beautifully, and I found myself drifting effortlessly toward sleep without the usual tossing and turning.

Switching to my back, I felt a gentle cradle beneath my lumbar region, paired with just the right amount of pushback to keep my spine neutrally aligned.

Throughout the night, the temperature control impressed me: even as the room warmed, I never awoke feeling overheated or sweaty—just cool, comfortable, and perfectly supported.

Finally, sitting up to read before bed, I appreciated the reinforced edges. There was no awkward “edge slump,” just stable support that made me feel secure whether I was lounging near the side or stretching out fully.

All in all, lying on the GhostBed Luxe felt like a personalized hug that adapts to every twist, turn, and dream, inviting me to sink in, relax, and wake up refreshed.

    – Highlights the supportive Ghost Bounce polyfoam layer and exceptional motion isolation from the dual gel memory foam.
  • “I love my mattress! The cooling effect has changed my sleep. I would wake up several times during the night, sweating. Now with the cooling mattress and pillows, I am sleeping ‘cool’ and not waking up in a pool of sweat! … Love it! Thank you, GhostBed!”
    – Praises the Ghost Ice cover’s phase-change fibers and gel infusion for continuous temperature regulation.
  • “I have slept perfectly on it since the first night. Noticeably cooler than my old mattress.”
    – Confirms immediate “out-of-the-box” comfort and the breathable knit cover’s rapid heat-wicking performance.
  • “Finally, no more sweaty nights!” Rosalie B. “It’s perfect for side and back sleepers!” Patricia P.
    – Underscores the medium-plush feel (5–6/10) that cradles curves without compromising spinal alignment.

To authenticate these user experiences, Dr. Jordan Burns, DC, MS, certified sleep coach at Eachnight, reviewed both anecdotal feedback and our rigorous testing data.

He confirmed that the Luxe’s trio of cooling technologies—Ghost Ice cover, dual gel memory foam, and breathable polyfoam—consistently delivered top-tier heat dissipation (9/10) and motion isolation (10/10).

His expert endorsement bridges user enthusiasm with scientific analysis, reinforcing the Luxe as a top gel memory foam pick for 2026.

When we analyzed the GhostBed Luxe’s construction, it became clear that each layer serves a strategic purpose in delivering cooling comfort, responsive support, and long-term durability. Here’s a deep dive into what makes this all-foam marvel tick:

  1. High-Density Support Base (7.5″)

    • Material & Purpose: Built from sturdy, CertiPUR-US®-certified polyfoam, this foundational layer resists sagging and maintains overall mattress shape.
    • Function: It anchors the upper comfort layers, ensuring spinal alignment and extending the mattress’s lifespan.
  2. Ghost Bounce™ Polyfoam (1″)

    • Material & Purpose: Proprietary bouncy foam with a quicker rebound than typical memory foam.
    • Function: Acts as a responsive transition zone, preventing you from feeling “stuck” and facilitating easy movement, especially helpful for combination sleepers who shift positions.
  3. Gel-Infused Memory Foam (2″)

    • Material & Purpose: Viscous, contouring foam infused with cooling gel beads.
    • Function: Cradles pressure points along shoulders and hips while drawing heat away from your body to maintain a neutral sleep temperature. Our team of testers noted its excellent motion absorption, making partners less likely to disturb each other.
  4. Ghost Ice™ Cooling Layer (1″)

    • Material & Purpose: Phase-change material embedded within specialized foam.
    • Function: Continuously absorbs and releases heat throughout the night, delivering that signature “cool-to-the-touch” feeling upon first lie-down.
  5. Second Gel-Infused Memory Foam (1″) + Cooling Cover (0.5″)

    • Material & Purpose: A top inch of gel foam topped by thermoreactive Ghost Ice fibers woven into a breathable knit cover.
    • Function: Provides final contouring and wicks away residual warmth. We researched cover performance across varying room temperatures and consistently saw cooler sleep surface readings compared to standard memory foam models.

Pros

  • Exceptional cooling performance
  • Pressure-relieving contour
  • Responsive, buoyant feel
  • Strong edge support
  • Excellent motion isolation

Cons

  • Premium price point
  • Heavy to maneuver

What the testers say: “The GhostBed Luxe felt medium in firmness, providing a comfortable balance between support and plushness, ideal for various sleep positions. A memory foam mattress’s response time was impressive, quickly adapting to body movements without excessive sinking. Motion transfer was minimal, allowing undisturbed sleep, even with a partner.” – Dr. Jordan Burns DC MS, Ghostbed Luxe Reviewer

We researched dozens of gel memory foam hybrids, but few matched the Aurora Luxe’s focus on temperature control. The top layer starts with GlacioTex™—a cool-to-the-touch cover that begins working the moment you lie down.

Underneath, a CopperFlex™ layer blends the plush responsiveness of foam with copper’s natural cooling and antimicrobial properties. Our testers noticed a big difference in how fresh and temperature-neutral it felt, even after several hours of sleep.

Another highlight? You can choose from Soft, Medium, or Firm models—each designed with a different type of sleeper in mind. Whether you like a cushiony cradle or firmer back support, there’s a version of the Aurora Luxe that’s built just for you. Our team of testers appreciated that the feel stayed consistent night after night, with no sagging or soft spots.

  • Soft: Ideal for side sleepers who want pressure relief in the shoulders and hips
  • Medium: Great for combo sleepers who need a balance between support and cushioning
  • Firm: Supportive for back and stomach sleepers who want more lift

What’s inside really counts. The Aurora Luxe features a multi-layer foam design paired with an 8-inch coil system that’s zoned for targeted support. This combo helps align your spine while isolating motion—so if your partner tosses and turns, you likely won’t feel a thing. Plus, reinforced edges make the whole surface feel usable and stable.

You know that moment when your body just melts into a mattress? That was it. I tested the Medium model, and right away, I noticed the top had this cool, smooth sensation—like freshly flipped pillows on a summer night. The GlacioTex™ cover isn’t just marketing fluff—it actually feels refreshing against your skin.

Here’s what stood out the most during my sleep test:

  • Cool touch, all night long – That GlacioTex™ cover stayed cool even when I rolled over or curled up.
  • Responsive bounce – I didn’t feel stuck when switching positions, which is huge for me as a combo sleeper.
  • Edge support – Sitting or lying near the edge didn’t cause any dip or roll-off.
  • Pressure relief where it matters – My lower back and shoulder tension melted away after just a couple of nights.

I also made sure to test the Aurora Luxe Hybrid in every sleep position—just to see how it handled the shifts. As a side sleeper most nights, I really appreciated the way it cushioned my shoulders and hips without making me feel like I was sinking too far.

When I rolled onto my back, I noticed how evenly my weight was supported, especially in the lumbar area.

No pressure buildup, just smooth alignment. Even stomach sleeping, which usually makes my back ache, felt surprisingly balanced on the Medium model.

I didn’t feel any awkward arching or pressure in my chest or hips. Honestly, it’s one of the few mattresses I’ve tried that didn’t favor just one type of sleeper—it felt adaptable across the board.

If I had to describe the feel in a nutshell—it’s like lying on a mattress that understands what your body needs before you even do. Supportive, cool, and quietly responsive. Honestly, after a week of testing, I didn’t want to go back to my old mattress.

One user wrote, “I finally sleep through the night without overheating.” The GlacioTex™ cooling cover and copper-infused foam clearly do their job, keeping the surface cool and breathable—something Dr. Burns also highlighted in her expert review.

Another reviewer said, “It feels soft on top, but I still get amazing support underneath.” That’s thanks to the mattress’s dual-layer foam system, which offers a plush, pressure-relieving feel over a sturdy, individually encased coil base. This balance makes it especially ideal for side and back sleepers needing both contouring and support.

A stomach sleeper commented, “The Firm option keeps me from sinking too far, but it’s still comfortable.” That points to the Aurora Luxe’s smart firmness variety—Soft, Medium, and Firm—tailored for body type and sleep position. The reinforced edge support also got a shoutout: “I can actually sit on the edge of the bed without sliding off.”

Our testers observed these same benefits: strong temperature regulation, zoned lumbar support, great motion isolation, and a responsive surface for easy movement.

In short, real-world sleepers agree—the Aurora Luxe Hybrid delivers on its promises of cool, responsive comfort and customizable support.

  1. At the top is the GlacioTex™ cooling cover, which offers immediate cool-to-the-touch comfort. Beneath it lies a 5-inch layer of CopperFlex™ foam—an open-cell foam infused with copper that provides responsive contouring and antimicrobial properties. This layer adapts quickly to movement while helping to disperse heat.
  2. Next is a 2-inch layer of gel swirl memory foam, designed to deepen pressure relief, especially around high-impact areas like shoulders, hips, and lower back. The gel infusion enhances temperature regulation, while the memory foam provides that “hugged” feeling without too much sinkage.
  3. Supporting those top layers is a 1-inch layer of firmer transition foam, which ensures your body doesn’t dip too far and keeps your spine aligned across all sleep positions.
  4. The core of the mattress features an 8-inch base of individually wrapped coils, arranged in a zoned configuration for added lumbar support and enhanced motion isolation. This layer gives the mattress its bounce and stability, allowing for reinforced edge support and airflow between the coils.
  5. Finally, a .75-inch high-density foam base anchors the entire structure, adding long-term durability and a touch of firmness.

Pros

  • Excellent cooling from GlacioTex™ and gel-infused foams
  • Zoned coils provide targeted lumbar support
  • Available in Soft, Medium, and Firm feels
  • Strong edge support for full-surface use

Cons

  • May be too tall (13.25″) for low-profile bed frames

What the testers say: “The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Hybrid mattress is one of my favorite mattresses. It offered a balanced level of firmness that catered well to a wide range of sleep preferences, providing substantial support without sacrificing comfort. The hybrid construction, combining high-quality foam layers with individually encased coils, resulted in a responsive sleep surface that quickly adapted to body movements, ensuring a comfortable transition between positions without delay.” – Dr. Jordan Burns, Brooklyn Bedding Reviewer

Traditional Memory Foam vs. Gel Memory Foam

Though popular, traditional memory foam runs the risk of retaining heat. Some sleepers may not mind this feature, but for hot sleepers or those who prefer a cooler surface, a gel memory mattress may be a better option.

1. Traditional Memory Foam

Heat and pressure from the body causes traditional memory foam, or viscoelastic foam to soften and conform to the body’s natural curves to relieve pressure points. Memory foam bounces back to its original shape once weight is removed.

2. Gel Memory Foam

Gel memory foam has the same viscoelastic properties as traditional memory foam, but it contains cooling gel, either mixed or swirled in. Gel absorbs and evenly disperses body heat to regulate temperature— infusing memory foam with gel reduces the risk of overheating and provides better sleep.

Other Types of Memory Foam

Other than gel memory foam, mattress manufacturers also created other types of memory foam, including responsive plant-based foam, advanced open-cell foam, and copper or graphite-infused foam.

1. Plant-Based

Manufacturers partially replace petroleum with plant-based oils for a breathable, more responsive memory foam. Plant-based memory foam also has little to no off-gassing odor.

2. Advanced Open-Cell

All memory foam in memory foam mattresses has an open-cell structure, but injecting large amounts of air creates larger air pockets, enabling better air circulation inside the material. The result is advanced open-cell foam.

SEE ALSO: Most Durable Mattresses

3. Copper- or Graphite-Infused

Some manufacturers infuse copper or graphite into the memory foam to keep heat away from the body. Copper is a natural heat conductor which pulls heat away and may even improve local blood flow.

Graphite is normally used to cool high-powered machines, like PCs. When infused with memory foam, graphite draws heat away and wicks away moisture.

What to Look for in a Gel Memory Foam Mattress?

Before choosing your best mattress, consider its quality, your body weight and favored sleep position, as well as available sleep trials, return policies, and warranties.

If you’re not sure if a gel memory foam mattress is right for you, take a look at other mattress types, including innersprings, latex, and hybrids.

A. Quality

To determine gel memory foam quality and ensure a high-quality mattress, look at the foam density and ILD rating.

a. Foam Density

Foam density is measured in pounds per cubic foot (PCF). Foam density determines how well the foam supports the body, or how long it takes the foam to spring back to its original shape. The higher the density, the slower the recovery. Most memory foam beds include a mix of low- and high-density foams.

  • Low-density: 2.5 to 3.9 PCF
  • Medium-density: 4.0 to 5.9 PCF
  • High-density: 5.5 PCF or higher

b. ILD Rating

ILD, or Indentation Load Deflection, determines a foam’s firmness by measuring how much pressure it takes to make a 4-inch indent on the surface. The higher the number, the firmer the foam. Most memory foams range between 8 to 20— 10 is the ideal measurement for the best support.

B. Body Weight

Body weight plays a major role in choosing a mattress with the right firmness. Body weight is divided into three categories— light, average, and plus-size. Each group needs a specific balance of comfort and support for the best sleep.

a. Light Sleepers

Light sleepers weigh less than 130 pounds. They need a softer surface to enable conforming, pressure-relief.

b. Average Sleepers

Average sleepers weigh between 130 pounds and 230 pounds. A medium is the right firmness level for them, offering a nice balance of comfort and support.

c. Plus-Size Sleepers

Plus-size sleepers weigh more than 230 pounds. Heavy people need a firmer surface for even support without risk of sagging.

C. Sleeping Position

Sleeping position is another major factor in choosing the right mattress firmness. Each sleep position needs a certain level of cushioning and support to fill in gaps between the body and the sleep surface, in addition to adequate support to align the spine.

a. Side Sleeping

Side sleeping is the healthiest sleep position. Side sleepers breathe better with reduced acid reflux and less pressure on vital organs, like the heart. Placing a pillow between the knees prevents spinal misalignment.

The best mattresses for side sleepers are soft to medium in firmness for proper pressure point relief in the shoulders and hips.

b. Back Sleeping

Back sleeping naturally aligns the spine, because of its direct contact with the surface. Placing a pillow under the knees reduces pressure in the lower back. Back sleepers face the risk of developing sleep apnea, where gravity causes the tongue to fall back, obstructing airways and soft tissue to collapse at the back of the throat.

Back sleepers need a medium to firm mattress to cradle the hips and provide enhanced support to the lower back.

c. Stomach Sleeping

Stomach sleeping is the unhealthiest sleep position because of the large amount of pressure placed on the spine, resulting in neck strain and back pain. Neck strain occurs when the sleeper twists their head at an unnatural angle to breathe. Back pain occurs when gravity pulls weight in the midsection down, forcing the natural curve of the spine to straighten, and even sometimes, unnaturally arch.

To alleviate some of these issues, stomach sleepers may want to consider using an extra firm mattress to help keep their body elevated and properly aligned during sleep. Additionally, placing a thin pillow under the hips can help relieve pressure in the lower back.

Medium-firm to extra firm beds are the best mattresses for stomach sleepers because they keep the body resting on top of the surface and prevent deep sinkage.

d. Combination Sleeping

Combination sleepers, or restless sleepers regularly toss and turn each night. Combination sleepers switch between 2 to 3 sleep positions, and may get the benefits of each, including reduced acid reflux and natural spinal alignment. However, combination sleepers also get the same health risks, like sleep apnea and back pain.

A medium mattress is the best mattress for combination sleepers, maintaining spinal alignment and providing a balance of comfort and support for each sleep position.

D. Sleep Trials, Return Policies, and Warranties

Features like sleep trials, return policies, and warranties assure customers of a quality mattress purchase that will last.

a. Sleep Trial

Sleep trials are a period of time the customer is given to try a new mattress within the comfort of their own home. Most sleep trials last between 90 to 120 nights— some companies require customers to keep the mattress for a mandatory “break in” period. If the customer isn’t happy with the mattress, most companies will issue a full refund.

b. Return Policy

A return policy is an okay substitute if a sleep trial is unavailable. Return policies last about 30 days— the same amount of time it takes most sleepers to adjust to a new sleep surface. Should the customer not like the mattress, they can return it for a refund.

c. Warranty

A mattress warranty covers manufacturing defects which could cause damage to the bed and sagging greater than 1 inch (this measurement varies among mattress brands). Most mattresses come with a standard 10-year warranty and only applies to the original purchaser.

E. Other Mattress Types

If memory foam isn’t for you, other mattress types include innerspring, latex, and hybrids. Each mattress type offers its own unique feel, like the sponge-like feel of latex.

a. Innerspring

Innerspring is a common type of mattress found in most homes. Innerspring mattresses are known for their bounciness, cooling, and edge support from innerspring coils. A typical innerspring mattress contains a thin comfort layer of foam or fiberfill (usually in pillowtop form) and a support layer of innerspring coils.

b. Latex

Latex foam is similar to memory foam— latex contours around the body, relieving pressure points and offering excellent motion isolation. Like memory foam, latex comfort and support layers can be used to build one of the best mattresses without springs.

Unlike memory foam, latex is cooler and has a responsive bounce. A latex mattress contains a comfort layer of latex and a support layer of either high-density poly-foam or latex.

There are two types of latex— synthetic and natural. Synthetic latex is created through a chemical process, while natural latex is made from rubber tree sap. Natural latex comes in two forms: Dunlop and Talalay. Dunlop is 100% natural latex, while Talalay incorporates polyurethane fillers for its signature soft feel.

c. Hybrid

A hybrid mattress combines pressure-relieving memory foam with the responsive bounce of innerspring coils to form the perfect bed. Hybrids provide sleepers with all the benefits of both mattress types, including motion isolation, cooling, and edge support. Generally, a hybrid mattress contains a comfort layer of either memory foam or latex (must be at least 2 inches thick) and a comfort layer of individually-wrapped coils.

F. Bedding Accessories

Bedding accessories are optional features to add to your new or current mattress. These features protect your mattress, provide enhanced comfort and support, and lend style to any living space.

a. Mattress Protector

A mattress protector shields the bed from spills and stains. They’re a great, low-cost option that may extend the life of your mattress. Most mattress warranties become void with liquid damage— instead of having to spend more money to replace a mattress, you can merely remove and machine wash the mattress protector.

b. Mattress Topper

Mattress toppers alter the feel of the mattress surface, adding softness to a firm bed and support to a soft bed. Mattress toppers also add extra cushioning for better pressure relief, and could also expand the bed’s lifespan since there’s more wear and tear on the mattress topper instead of the mattress itself.

c. Bed Frame

Bed frames are a stylish and functional addition to any bedroom. Always check the dimensions of your new or current mattress to ensure a perfect fit. An advantage of a gel memory foam mattress is that they don’t need a frame or foundation— they get plenty of support placed directly on the floor.

FAQs

How long do gel memory foam mattresses last?

Most high-quality gel memory foam mattresses last between 7 to 9 years. These beds usually last just as long as standard memory foam mattresses, as cooling gels don’t necessarily impact a bed’s lifespan. When looking for a long-lasting mattress, ensure it’s made with durable materials.

Why is memory foam so hot?

Memory foam has a very dense structure that doesn’t allow much airflow, which is why memory foam is known to retain heat. However, this problem is easily remedied by choosing a mattress containing cooling memory foam. Cool memory foam mattresses don’t always contain cooling gels, either, some are more cooling because they contain copper or graphite infusions or because they’re plant-based.

Are gel mattresses good quality?

It depends on the gel mattress! What determines the quality of the bed isn’t the addition (or lack of) cooling gels, it really depends on the durability of the mattress’s materials. Cooling foam beds with nothing but low-density layers aren’t great quality, but cooling foam beds with both high-density and low-density layers is good quality.

Are gel mattresses good for back pain?

They certainly can be. Many sleepers with back pain enjoy the cooling benefits of gel infusions. Cooling gels can help you get more comfortable sleep and, as a result, keep back pain at bay.

Is gel memory foam or memory foam better?

It’s a matter of personal preference. Many hot sleepers enjoy gel memory foam mattresses because they’re more cooling than traditional memory foam. However, traditional memory foam is popular for a good reason, and many people find comfortable sleep on these beds.

Conclusion

Gel memory foam mattresses absorb and disperse body heat while conforming to the body, relieving pressure points— a great solution to traditional memory foam’s heat retention problem. Gel memory foam is perfect for hot sleepers and those who prefer a cooler surface. We hope our article helps you in finding the best gel memory foam mattress.
