Like the Zoma Mattress Lineup, the Zoma Adjustable Bed was designed with athletes and those with active lifestyles in mind. It’s made to pair with one of the Zoma mattresses to offer the best and most recuperative sleep possible.

The articulation on this bed offers a full 60 degrees at the head and 35 degrees at the feet to help you sit all the way up and elevate your legs with ease. This can reduce swelling and improve circulation for a more restorative slumber.

The Zoma Adjustable Bed also features the zero-gravity preset, along with a couple of others. As the bed rises into the zero-gravity position, it works to reduce pressure on the spine for back pain relief and lowered tension in the shoulders and neck. Plus, the zero-gravity position can help boost blood circulation.

The dual massage feature can help relax sore and tired muscles after a hard day of working out, which may improve sleep quality. And it’s designed to work with or without legs. So you won’t have to worry about changing your bedroom style or your bed height.

The Zoma Adjustable Bed also comes with a backless wireless remote, one-touch presets, and connectivity. So changing the bed’s settings is as easy as pressing a button or giving a voice command.

If you want an adjustable base designed with the human body in mind, consider the Ascension® Luxe Adjustable Power Base by Brooklyn Bedding. This is one of the most advanced sleep solutions available on the market.

The ergonomic design of this adjustable base offers unbeatable comfort and spinal support. The head and foot tilts can be adjusted to fit anyone’s needs, no matter their height. And the advanced head tilt is perfect for those with neck and shoulder pain. Allowing for different head tilt positions can make it more comfortable to sleep if you have cervical stenosis, disc-herniations, and shoulder impingement.

Aside from its pain-relieving ergonomic design, the Ascension Luxe also includes a remote-sync option to control both sides of the bed simultaneously, plus USB ports for charging.

Brooklyn Bedding also has another adjustable base option, although it’s only available in a queen size. What makes this alternative, the Ascension® Ultra Adjustable Power Base, a must-mention is the extremely slim design and extension seat it features. The extension seat reduces friction on the back of your mattress. This translates into less wear and tear on the bottom of your mattress.

Pros

  • Ergonomic design is made for spinal alignment and pain relief
  • Flashlight built into remote for easy nighttime use
  • Zero-clearance design lets it be used with almost any bed frame

Cons

  • Small range of adjustable bed sizes

Benefits of an Adjustable Bed

Adjustable beds have all kinds of amazing benefits that can help you get a better night’s sleep and improve your overall health. From easing back and neck pain to reducing snoring and helping partners continue to share a bed, adjustable bases can help with just about every sleep-related ailment. Here are just a few.

Pain Relief

One of the best benefits of zero-gravity or adjustable beds is the pain relief they offer. These bases allow you to choose the best position that works for you. That means you can elevate your legs and head in a manner that helps reduce whatever pain ails you.

The zero-gravity position relieves pressure on the spine. This can translate into relief all over your back, from your neck to your lumbar region. It can also help alleviate pain from tension in your shoulders, especially for back sleepers. Lastly, it can improve lower body circulation with people with congestive heart failure or lymphedema says Dr. Bhavik Sheth, Physical Therapist.

Body Stress Reduction

Sleeping in an elevated position can help reduce stress on your joints. It redistributes weight away from certain joints to reduce pressure on the hips, shoulders, and other potential problem areas. This means less pain in pressure points and possibly even relief from arthritis pain.

Adjustable beds can also help reduce the stress of getting in and out of bed for those with mobility issues. If you have trouble sitting up or lying down on your own, you can get an adjustable bed to do a lot of the work for you.

Snoring Relief

One of the best uses for an adjustable bed is to stop snoring. When you sleep, the muscles in your throat relax, allowing your soft palate to fall down due to gravity pulling on it while you lie down. For many people, especially back sleepers, this can result in some pretty loud snoring. In extreme cases, it may even lead to obstructive sleep apnea.

Sleeping with the head elevated helps you use gravity to keep your throat tissues in place. This translates into a reduction or even elimination of snoring. It can also help alleviate sleep apnea symptoms in some sufferers.

SEE ALSO: Best Mattresses for Sleep Apnea

Improved Circulation

The zero-gravity position helps keep your heart below your legs and head. Just like with snoring, that lets gravity work in your favor by making it easier for blood to get back to your heart. When blood arrives at your heart faster, it gets circulated out again with less resistance. That improves the circulation throughout your whole system.

Acid Reflux Reduction

Once again, gravity is your friend with the adjustable bed. In the case of acid reflux, lying down means gravity is no longer working to keep your stomach acid from coming up the esophagus. That makes it all the easier for reflux to happen. But if you sleep with your head elevated, gravity can work to keep your stomach acid down all night long.

SEE ALSO: Best Mattresses for Acid Reflux

Lowered Inflammation

Improved circulation and better sleep quality can help reduce generalized inflammation throughout your whole body, even if you don’t have a specific condition. However, those who do have conditions like lymphedema or lipedema may find that sleeping with their legs elevated over the rest of their body helps keep swelling down.

Improved Sleep

It goes without saying that relieving sleep-related ailments like sleep apnea and nocturnal acid reflux can go a long way to improving sleep quality and quantity. However, even those without a sleep problem can benefit from an adjustable bed.

The massage and heating features in some beds can help relax muscles and slow down the nervous system in preparation for sleep. And the improved spinal alignment and pressure relief offered by an adjustable bed can also go a long way to keeping you from tossing and turning all night long. Sleep quality is highly correlated with reducing injury risks in athletes.

Adjustable beds may also help you if you have an unhealthy sleep position (like stomach sleeping). Getting more comfortable on your back in the zero-gravity position may help you train yourself away from sleeping in positions that aren’t so good for your spine.

Daytime Comfort

Adjustable beds don’t just make your nights more comfy, as you can use them during the day, too. Pairing a mattress with one of the best mattresses for sitting up in bed can create a space for lounging, reading, and TV watching.

This can be especially helpful for people who are using an adjustable bed to make long-term bed rest more comfortable. Being able to sit up in bed with the touch of a button can help you slide out of bed in the morning.

How to Choose an Adjustable Bed

Adjustable beds used to be only for hospitals and care facilities. However, with the dissemination of the technology, a flood of adjustable beds has inundated the market in recent years. This can make it tough to know what to buy.

Not knowing the right thing to purchase can be a huge problem for something as expensive as an adjustable base. But if you keep a few things in mind, it won’t be too tough to make the right choice.

Assembly

Putting an adjustable bed together isn’t ever going to be as easy as slapping together a simple platform bed. However, the assembly process can vary from adjustable bed to adjustable bed. Some adjustable bases are easier to assemble than others.

If you’re good with tools, this may not matter to you. But if handiness isn’t your strong suit, you’ll probably want to look for easy assembly models.

Control Methods

There are several possible control methods for an adjustable bed. Older models might have buttons on the side or base that control the bed’s position. However, those have generally fallen out of use in favor of remotes that allow you to adjust the bed while lying comfortably in it.

Remote controls for adjustable beds may be wireless or connected to the bed by a cable. Wireless remotes are more convenient because you don’t have to deal with a cord, so they’re the more popular choice. However, if you worry about losing the remote, a cable might be the way to go.

Many newer adjustable base models also have wireless connectivity. They may come with a mobile app so you can control them using your phone. They might also be able to connect with Google Home or Alexa so you can use voice commands to adjust them.

Extra Features

Adjustable beds can come with tons of amazing features besides the ability to move up and down. Some have underbed lighting. Others have USB charging. Some even have massage and heating features.

Just remember that every feature will affect the price of your bed. So keep in mind you may not be able to get some of the more luxurious add-ons if you’re shopping on a budget.

Price

Adjustable beds are not cheap. Regular bed frames can be as little as a few hundred dollars. But when shopping for an adjustable bed, you’ll probably wind up paying between $1,000 and $3,000 for an adjustable bed, possibly more if you get luxury features.

Some manufacturers might allow yoau to use third-party financing if you can’t afford to lay down thousands of dollars for a mattress and adjustable bed up-front.

Warranty

Most adjustable bases won’t come with a risk-free sleep trial. But they should come with a warranty of some kind. In fact, buying an adjustable bed that doesn’t feature a warranty probably isn’t a great idea.

Warranties for adjustable beds can vary in length, and they may have separate warranties for electrical components and other materials. So read the fine print before you purchase.

Weight and Weight Capacity

Adjustable beds can weigh a lot more than regular bed frames. They can fall anywhere between 150 to 750 pounds. So you’ll need to take that into consideration because it can impact moving your bed around. And you may need to think about your floor’s ability to handle a heavy bed, especially if you live in an older house.

You’ll also need to think about the adjustable base’s maximum weight. Most adjustable bases will say how much weight they can handle. But the weight capacity includes every pound that will be on the bed. So you’ll want to know the weight of your mattress and all the sleepers who’ll be using it before you shop.

Appearance

While for many it’s far from the most important part of an adjustable bed, some shoppers want an adjustable bed that won’t look like a hunk of metal. Many adjustable beds are designed with upholstered frames to look more pleasing to the eye, while some adjustable beds can slip inside a frame.

Other ways to dress up an adjustable bed include:

  • Attaching a headboard to an adjustable bed frame
  • Wrapping a bed skirt around the adjustable bed

Compatible Mattresses for an Adjustable Bed

Not all mattresses are created equal and can act as one of the best mattresses for an adjustable bed. In fact, one of the most popular mattresses on the market cannot be used with an adjustable bed. Traditional innerspring mattresses are too stiff and rigid to move with the adjustable base when it exits the flat position.

These innerspring mattresses will “float” above the base rather than stick to it. Moving an adjustable base under your innerspring bed may even break it.

All the other most popular mattress types on the market are compatible with adjustable bases. Shoppers can pair their adjustable base with:

  • Memory foam mattresses
  • Latex mattresses
  • Hybrid mattresses

Just keep in mind that if you have an innerspring mattress, you’ll have to replace it to have an adjustable bed.

Also, you cannot use box springs or a mattress foundation on an adjustable bed. So you’ll need to keep in mind you’ll need a taller adjustable base if you want to maintain the same bed height that you currently have.

Why Choose a Split King Mattress?

Split kings allow you to take two twin XL mattresses and place them in the same bed frame. This means you can have a single bed with two halves that each have their own firmness level and material.

Split king size mattresses are the perfect beds for couples who have divergent sleep needs but still want to share a bed. There are lots of scenarios where this could be the case.

For instance, some couples have sleep positions or body types that are so different they can’t compromise on firmness level. Two twin XL beds forming a split king can provide two different mattresses for each one.

Other couples might have different material needs. For example, a hot sleeper might want a latex or hybrid mattress to keep cool, while their side sleeper partner wants a memory foam mattress for deep contouring.

You can also use different adjustable base settings with a split king. So one partner can take the zero-gravity position while the other lies flat. One can elevate the head while the other elevates the feet. Split king beds allow couples to have exactly what they individually want while still sleeping in the same bed.

The one main complication of a split king is buying bedding, as most split king bedding sets have fitted twin XL sheets and king top sheets. This can be further complicated by finding ways to keep sheets on an adjustable bed, which may take a set of elastic straps or deep pocketed sheets. Still, when it comes to improved couples’ comfort, most sleepers find sheet shopping to be a minor inconvenience.

FAQs

Will my new adjustable bed make noise?

All adjustable bases make some noise. There’s no way to make a bunch of moving metal parts totally quiet. However, there’s a pretty big range for how quiet or noisy adjustable beds are. If you sleep alone or have a partner who sleeps deeply, then you may not be bothered by a noisy adjustable base.

However, if you’re in a situation where you need your bed to be quiet, you might want to be more careful. Virtually all adjustable beds are going to claim to be quiet. So the best way for you to know if they actually are is by reading customer reviews.

Can I get an adjustable bed that is not split down the middle?

Adjustable beds come in a variety of sizes. Most of the time, you’ll be able to get a single adjustable bed frame in any size you want up to a queen. However, once you get to the king and California king sizes, things get a little trickier.

It’s more common to find standard and California king size adjustable bases split down the middle. This isn’t just because couples tend to prefer split kings. It’s also because California and standard king size adjustable beds are tough to assemble and move. Splitting these huge beds into two bases is much more practical.

Don’t worry, though. If you decide you want a single mattress for your king or California king adjustable bed, you can do the split bases and just move the two of them together.

How much should I pay for an adjustable bed?

There’s not really a hard and fast answer to this question. The average price of an adjustable base is $1,000 to $3,000. However, if you get a bunch of extra features, the price you pay could go over this amount. It’s also possible to find value-priced adjustable bases under $1,000.

Aside from features, you also have to think about adjustable base size. Obviously, getting a full or queen adjustable bed will be cheaper than any of the king sizes. Couples who don’t mind sharing a mattress and the same settings might consider a queen adjustable base to save a few hundred dollars.

Can I use my adjustable base with my existing bed frame?

That depends on the dimensions of the bed frame and the adjustable base. Some adjustable bed frames are made to stand alone and cannot be used with your existing frame because they have legs or rails that are too large. However, other adjustable bed bases are made to fit inside any traditional bed frame.

If you want an adjustable bed, that doesn’t mean you have to give up a beloved frame or change the style of your bedroom, then make sure you’re reading the description of the products you consider. If an adjustable base can fit inside your existing bed frame, it will clearly say so.

Is the zero-gravity pose the best position for my adjustable bed?

The zero-gravity pose is one of the best poses for an adjustable bed. It puts both the head and the legs above the heart. This can increase circulation, ease back pain, and decrease swelling in your legs. It may also help with sleep apnea and nocturnal acid reflux.

However, if you’re not a back sleeper, the zero-gravity pose may not be all that comfortable for you. Side sleepers and stomach sleepers might want different settings for their adjustable beds. For example, stomach sleepers might just want to elevate their feet while leaving their heads flat.

So ultimately, the best position for your adjustable bed is the one that works for you, and consult with your medical doctor if you have any underlying medical conditions.

Bottom Line

Split adjustable kings are the perfect mattresses for couples. They let each partner choose their own sleep position, material, and firmness level without necessitating two beds. They’re the perfect way to compromise without compromising.

  • Our articles typically link to other articles and resources on our site. This is solely for easier navigation, and we do not promote our website as a medical resource. Try to speak with your physician if you have medical concerns.
  • Any necessary background information on a topic will be included when appropriate.
  • Our goal is for every one of our medical-related articles to be reviewed by our independent board of experts. Should they spot any medical or health-related misinformation or errors, we will strike it out from the final published article.

What’s a Certified Sleep Coach?

Our writers are sleep coaches certified by the Spencer Institute, which has been training coaches since 1992. Becoming a certified sleep coach means that our writers are well-versed in various sleep science matters, taking us beyond being just a group of mattress reviewers. The certification allows us an in-depth understanding of what we’re talking about when it comes to advising readers on better sleep habits.
